So, Marta and Jim...did you get your cleaning done yet? Oh wait, Jim, how

can you be doing all that lifting and bending and carrying and cleaning yet?

Isn't it a bit too soon? Hope you're being careful...... he owns his own

Ann, no, not by itself. One must eat black eyed peas with the greens. But in

my family, it was just the black eyed peas. Eating them on New Year's day is

a superstition that means you'll have good luck throughout the new year.

It's an OLD southern thing.

Miz Mellie here(My name came from gone with the wind!) The significance I

know of is that the greens signify wealth in the new year. The peas signify

either luck or coins, while the greens are dollars.

Here's a FYI about the tradition- I thought everyone did it, not just

here in the south!........I didn't eat cornbread but might ought to go get

some cold and eat it....LOL.

In the southern United States, it is believed eating black eyed peas on New

Year's eve will bring luck for the coming year.

Also from the south comes the custom of eating greens such as cabbage,

collard greens, mustard greens, kale or spinach to bring money.

One more from the Southerners: eating cornbread will bring wealth.

The Southern custom of eating greens can be found in other cultures as well,

although the cabbage can take many forms, such as sauerkraut or even kimchee.

In the Philippines, it is important to have food on the table at midnight in

order to insure an abundance of food in the upcoming year.

Jim,

No way! I love the smell of greens cooking. Now green beans is another

story! Usually I cook mine fresh, but this year I cheated and bought a big

can of greens and cooked them. Add some hog jowls and a little sweetner and

they are so good and greasy with a touch of sweet....yummy.

Is it reminiscent of Brussels sprouts? I hate the smell of them cooking! Or

could it be the smell of rotting leaves?

I want the WEALTH, though, dang it!

When you say " hog jowls " you don't mean the pigs face do you? Please say

that's NOT what you meant. 8>0

I guess that's where they come from...LOL. I try not to think of where my

meats come from. Easier to eat pigs when you don't think about them having

faces....

Worst ever....I was doing home health and was visiting the home of an elderly

black lady. I thought something was burning. Turns out it was their

chittlin's cooking....Eweeee n-a-s-t-y. They had a good laugh at my cost! I

noticed

that they had them on sale at food max the other day. Every time I see them I

have this flashback of the odor!

Okay...I hate to show my ignorance...but what are chittlins? I meant to ask

that when we were on the subject a week or two ago.
