Ann, have you ever SMELLED a " mess of greens " cooking? I bet you haven't.

That smell makes me physically ill. I can remember coming home from school

as a kid, opening the front door and that egregious odour hitting me in the

face like a sledgehammer. God, I hate greens!!!!!!

My mom loved the smell of them cooking, too. I don't know where she acquired

the taste for greens of all kinds, but man, those mustard greens cooking

smelled like 7 day old vomit. And it usually made me do just that!

We used to can our own green beans, but during the past 15 years or so, I

just buy canned and soak them for a few hours before cooking slowly with

some broth and some port of some kind. I do love salt port! And ham hocks,

and hog jowl. Man, I sound like an Alabamian. :( LOL

Jim,

No way! I love the smell of greens cooking. Now green beans is

another

story! Usually I cook mine fresh, but this year I cheated and bought a big

can of greens and cooked them. Add some hog jowls and a little sweetner

and

they are so good and greasy with a touch of sweet....yummy.

When you say " hog jowls " you don't mean the pigs face do you? Please say

that's NOT what you meant. 8>0

One time I was at my boyfriend's and, I have this talent of

endearing myself to others, see? and I had been helping/watching his

dad operate on a dog's belly, see? Then I came into the house and

his mom was cooking cabbage. With my usual grace I said something

to the effect that it smelled worse than the dogs bowels... believe

it or not, to this day Charlotte still speaks to me! LOL!

Marta

creeped out to realize that this occured about 25 yrs ago!!! Really!

Now, that is funny. I love cooked cabbage-- boiled, fried, steamed, you name

it. I love slaw sauce drizzled over it to (Mayonnaise, lemon juice,

sweetener, a little bacon drippings). Oh, yes, gourmet eatin' foe show! OK,

I have to make a trip to the store for some cabbage, now. . . . yous guys is

bad foe those who's trying to be good on Turty-turd street and turdy-second

ave-ah-noo.

I'm with you on frozen green beans, though. Anything else frozen is fine,

but not green beans. And I hate that stupid green bean casserole with the

fried onions on top! ECH!

They are the intestines of either pigs or cows(can't remember which). Black

folks around here traditionally eat them especially at the holidays.....they

boil them for hours then deep fat fry them. The boiling is what smells so bad!!

They come in big buckets frozen.

Jim,

Ummm, no comment. Say what!?! Guess who showed up again last

night...at my house...with another of the single girls from our

group. We put in a movie BUT she had to leave (they came in separate

cars) and left me and Bob there to watch the movie. Then when he

left, he left his wallet there!! Uh huh! Sounds like a B-movie

plot!!! He picked it up today at my work.

And you should hear my son!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks, Mel...I ended up looking this up when I didn't hear back from

you...same thing (more or less) as tripas -- they are fried, but as they fry

they

emit buckets of water, and they smell beyond bad (talk about disgusting to

cook)!

Year's day is a superstition that means you'll have good luck
