Utilizing scientifically validated treatment procedures, Eden II/Genesis Programs has been a leader in the effective intervention and education of individuals with autism over the past 30 years. In an effort to disseminate sound information about autism spectrum disorders and provide training and support, Eden II/Genesis Programs will offer the following winter workshops.

WINTER AUTISM WORKSHOPS

These workshops are designed to offer training in the understanding and implementation of applied behavior analysis (ABA) procedures for individuals across the autism spectrum. These workshops are open to professionals and parents and workshop content is suitable for intervention with individuals of all ages and functioning levels across the autism spectrum.

Each workshop will be 5 hours long* with a 1 hour break for lunch. Lunch will be on your own.

1. WINTERTIME BLUES: DEVELOPING RECREATION AND LEISURE ACTIVITIES FOR INDIVIDUALS WITH ASD WITH LIMITED SKILL REPERTOIRES

Sparacio, MS Ed, SAS, SDA

For individuals with autism and their families, unstructured time is often the most challenging. This workshop will focus on teaching students with autism to become more independent and self-directed in leisure skills. Some areas of focus will be on the components of leisure development, assessment, and implementation.

This workshop is appropriate for parents and caregivers as well as anyone that has an interest in this topic.

2. IS MY STUDENT REALLY LEARNING? A HANDS-ON WORKSHOP TO IMPLEMENTING STUDENT IEP SUCCESS

Often individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) are placed in inclusion settings, with the hope of successfully achieving academically and socially driven objectives. These objectives are created by multidisciplinary teams, and placed on a child’s Individualized Educational Plan (IEP). In this age of documentation, educators may become overwhelmed by the notion of data collection. This hands-on workshop will demonstrate different methods to monitor progress for individuals with ASD in inclusion settings. In addition, looking at student performance, and making adaptations to teaching methods accordingly, will be discussed.

3. UNDERSTANDING, ADDRESSING, AND MANAGING CHALLENGING BEHAVIOR IN THE SCHOOL – AGED INDIVIDUAL WITH AUTISM

Joanne Sgambati, PhD

The focus of this workshop is on the effective implementation of techniques chosen based on the functional assessment to address challenging behaviors in individuals with ASD. Preventative strategies include curricular, environmental, and instruction modifications, as well as the more strategic use of motivation systems. Reactive strategies to be discussed include time out, extinction, and overcorrection. Data collection procedures to help determine the efficacy of intervention will be highlighted along with guidelines for subsequent troubleshooting and intervention fading.

4. Integrating Speech-Language and Communication Programming Across the Entire School Day: A Collaborative Team Approach

Autism is a disorder of communication and socialization. The acquisition of speech, language, and communication skills for individuals with severe communication disorders (such as autism) can be limited by poor generalization of acquired skills across environments. The success of the student’s ability to increase language acquisition, and functional communication skills require regular collaboration by all members of the educational team. A more consultative and collaborative approach increases the range of programming activities and environments for individuals who have communication impairments. Programming should be provided across all settings as opposed to the non-contextual environment of the speech-therapy room. Treatment goals relate to all aspects of the school, including curricular, classroom behavior and social interactions. This presentation will discuss the advantages of a “work load model†versus a “case load model,†and how the former can be more advantageous to students with severe language and communication deficits. Suggestions for practical applications will be discussed.

5. PROMOTING SOCIAL SKILLS IN INDIVIDUALS WITH AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDERS

This workshop will discuss a variety of strategies that have been successful for improving social skills in individuals with ASD. Specific strategies to be discussed will include topics such as: the use of behavioral rehearsal, social stories, cognitive picture rehearsal, role playing, using video modeling and video self-modeling.

EARLY CHILDHOOD WORKSHOPS

These early childhood workshops are designed to assist in the development of effective treatment programs for young children affected by autism spectrum disorders and are targeted to professionals and parents seeking information for children in the early intervention through preschool age range.

Each workshop will be 3 hours long with no breaks.

1. TEACHING LANGUAGE TO YOUNG CHILDREN WITH AUTISM: INCORPORATING PLAY AND SOCIAL SKILLS EARLY ON IN INTERVENTION

One of the early diagnostic indicators of children with diagnosed as having Autism Spectrum Disorders is a lack of social skills. From infancy, these ‘social skills’ are defined as joint attention, eye contact, and creativity in pretend play skills. This presentation will highlight the importance of such factors, as well as provide strategies to increase appropriate play, as a method to expand language. Clinical examples will be provided.

2. TOILET TRAINING CHILDREN ON THE AUTISM SPECTRUM

This workshop will present a variety of treatment programs designed to target issues with toileting. Topics discussed in the area of toilet training will include urination training, bowel training, initiating, requesting and independence.

3. DEVELOPING A COMPREHENSIVE CURRICULUM FOR CHILDREN WITH AUTISM FROM BIRTH TO 5

It is often challenging to develop curriculum for young children with autism due to their diverse needs. There are critical foundation skills that are essential in the development of a comprehensive curriculum and must be addressed early on in the education process. This presentation will cover specific curriculum areas to be addressed, as well as a sequential and individualized approach to curriculum development for young learners with autism spectrum disorders. Sample curriculum will be provided and discussed.

4. EARLY WORD LEARNING IN YOUNG CHILDREN WITH AUTISM: CONSIDERATIONS FOR INTERVENTION

Deficits in the development of speech and language are consistent problems in children with autism and related disorders. There is research in the area of language development and psycholinguistics that indicates underlying deficits in lexical development and organization in individuals with ASD. A delay in the development of vocabulary can adversely affect all other aspects of language and communication development. This workshop will focus on the potential obstacles to word learning in young children with ASD as well as strategies to address these obstacles. Specifically the workshop will provide a framework for integrating the psycholinguistic research on lexical development into behavioral programming for young learners with ASD.
