I have not tested this as of yet. I would especially like to know what has caused this to occur at my age ( I am now 46). This message doesn't offer any insight, but is just a commiseration. : from what I've read and after discussion with my MD, they just don't know why this happens, but it does. You can spontaneously develop an allergy to a previously benign food. Since you are now allergic to so many beneficial fruits and nuts, be sure to replace these nutrients with either other foods that contain them, or with supplements. Since fruits and nuts are such an important part of a CRON diet, it might be worthwhile to try the cooked versions to see if you can tolerate them; of course I understand your trepidation in being reluctant to endure the allergic symptoms yet again. Guest guest
I don't have any food allergies, and haven't found a connection between any particular foods and how my RA is acting. I know that some folks have trouble with nightshades (potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, etc) but they don't seem to impact me. Certainly I feel best when I eat a healthy well balanced diet and get enough rest. Stress and fatigue are my main triggers. Hi Kay, I've always been interested in your posts. I've been off wheat for three days, after my step-mom (a chiropractor) strongly encouraged it. She knew someone who completely recovered from RA after going off wheat. I had no idea I ate so much of it until these past few days... I have already noticed two changes: less mental fuzziness and less muscular weakness. I went off dairy for a while last fall and didn't notice anything. Guest guest
Dear Kay, From: Kay Simpson Diet is VERY important - No sugar, no milk, no wheat, no caffeine, no soft drinks, no fried food or junk food - This has helped me tremendously.... Thank you SO MUCH for your post. I had some research bookmarked about this and I'll try and find it and post it. I'm just going to come out and say this....I'm a food addict in a recovery program and I too know that eliminating the foods you mentioned above has helped me with my RA but I've been dabbling in them again and I can tell. I've never tried eliminating milk but the no sugar/wheat/caffeine thing I've done before and had good stretches with it and a great reduction in my RA symptoms. My question is do you have any concrete medical research that indicates that avoiding these substances greatly improves ones RA condition? Thank you so much. Guest guest
Dear , From: shelly smiegal Dear Dodie, Your honesty is very refreshing! How areyou feeling today? It's too early yet for me to knowhow I'm going to feel today. I put on weight sincebeing diagnosed with all of this. It really hurtswhen people comment to me, why don't you get theweight off? I did lose 12 pounds recently and it mademe happy to experience it, but it hurt that no onesaid anything to me. Guess they didn't notice! Feelfree to talk with me about this anytime. Let's besupportive to each other. Sound good? Have a greatday! Email me anytime at shelsmieg2000@... Hugs, Thanks for thinking my honesty is refreshing . I just think it's best to be myself.... :-) I'm okay today. Went yesterday to my ankle surgeon appointment and I don't have to go back unless something happens to the ankle fusion (had that done in January). Then went to the rheumy appt. and don't have to go back there for two months. I'm to stay on the Humira and Methotrexate. Tell people that it isn't as easy to get around like you once did so it's way harder to burn calories. Great you were able to get some of it off ! We recently talked about expectations on another group I'm on. Guest guest
Dodie, I have read a lot and get suggestions from what I read. When I discovered that eliminating certain foods made me feel better, that was enough for me. Why do you feel you must read it in a medical journal somewhere? Doctors are not Gods and I have seen many. What works for one may not work for another. It is more a trial and error thing with food I think. I doubt you will ever find a doctor who will tell you much about diet because in medical school they only have one course on nutrition and it is optional and many don't even bother to take it. I had a doctor tell me that so I did not make that up. My opinion is that they really just don't know. I am rather cynical I suppose after seeing so many doctors who just hand out drugs that all have side effects.. My body is very sensitive and I could not handle all the drugs. I am happy for you that you lost 12 pounds and hope you can feel encouraged that you feel better when you avoid certain foods. I do get tired of being very restricted with my diet but the pain I can avoid is a great incentive. Good luck and God bless, Kay ----- Original Message ----- From: Dodie Rheumatoid Arthritis Sent: Friday, May 07, 2004 6:10 AM Subject: Re: Food allergies Dear Kay, From: Kay Simpson Diet is VERY important - No sugar, no milk, no wheat, no caffeine, no soft drinks, no fried food or junk food - This has helped me tremendously.... Guest guest
Dear Kay and All, From: Kay Simpson Why do you feel you must read it in a medical journal somewhere? I guess because I've not hurt bad enough (physically, emotionally, and spiritually). I just thought you may have had some bookmarks on it because I'd read somewhere that eliminating wheat greatly improved ones RA symptoms and I can't remember From: Kay Simpson I am happy for you that you lost 12 pounds and hope you can feel encouraged that you feel better when you avoid certain foods. It was who had lost the weight (Hooray !). Thanks for the well wishes and encouragement Kay. They are greatly appreciated!! From: Kay Simpson I do get tired of being very restricted with my diet but the pain I can avoid is a great incentive. I have two cookbooks where the recipes are designed eliminating sugar and wheat as ingredients so if you ever need that source let me know. You give me hope Kay that I can again clean up my food plan!!! Thanks. Best Wishes, Dodie
Guest guest
Hi Kay, Here are the sites Kay. If others aren't interested in this thread, please hit delete now. Thanks From: Kay Simpson Dodie, I really don't like to cook but would be interested in those recipes eliminating sugar and wheat. I ordered the one here: http://www.foodaddictsanonymous.org/pdf/OrderFormFeb2004.PDF and this group you would have to join but in their files they have a ton of recipes all of which are specific with no sugar/wheat/flour: TheBodyKnows/ and I got the other one from: http://www.kaysheppard.com/ Here are a couple recipesfrom the group above: 4 Bean Salad ¾ c. wax beans ¾ c. green beans ½ c. diced onion and red pepper 1/3 c. chick peas 1/3 c. black benas 1/3 c. red kidney beans 1 T. olive oil (or less) 1 T. red wine vinegar ¼ t. oregano ¼ t. basil Mix all together and chill 2 hours or overnight. Add 4 oz. Protein on side or in it for a complete meal. (1 ½ c. cooked veggie, ½ c. raw veggie, 1 starch, 1 fat, 1 T. condiment, ½ t. spice) Abstinent Ketchup 2 8oz cans sugar free tomato sauce 1/8 tsp each, dry mustard, allspice, cinammon and celery seed 60 drops liquid sweetener 1/4 cup vinegar 1 tsp onion powder dash cayenne pepper Combine all ingredients except sweetener in saucepan. Simmer 30 minutes until thickened. Remove from heat, stir in sweetener. Store in refrigerator. Used as a condiment. Abstinent Pizza 1 cup cooked brown rice 1 egg (or ¼ c liquid egg whites or 2 egg whites) ¼ t. sea salt 1 cup tomato sauce 1 cup cooked peppers, onions and mushrooms (or whatever veggies you want) 2 oz. Protein (cubed or ground chicken or turkey, ground beef, or 4 oz. Crumbled tofu) ¼ t oregano ¼ t basil ¼ t red pepper flakes ¼ t sea salt ¼ t pepper 1 t. olive oil (or not) Oven should be at 350 degrees Mix rice, egg and salt completely in a bowl Spray glass pie dish with safe cooking spray Pour rice mixture into bowl and bake for 10 minutes Top ‘crust’ with a cup tomato sauce, cooked veggies, protein and spices Bake for another 10 to 15 minutes Top with oil before eating Makes entire lunch or dinner so eat it all. (1 grain, 1 protein, 2 cooked veggies, 1 ¼ t. spice, 1 t.fat) Good Ol' Chilli 4 oz. ground turkey, or ground chicken or ground beef (watch for prepackaged ones as they have natural flavorings = sugar) 2 T. cup raw chopped onions (condiment – can include as part of 2 cups veggies instead) 2 cups diced tomatoes 1 cup chili bean mixture (pinto, kidney and black beans) Saute the onions in safe cooking spray with some garlic and add the measured meat. Then add the tomatoes and beans. Season with ¼ t. cumin, ¼ t chili powder, ¼ t red pepper flakes (if you like it hot like me), ¼ t sea salt and ¼ t pepper. Lunch and Dinner Loaves First recipe: loaves (these freeze well) - these are complete meals for lunch or dinner (bake all loaves in small loaf pans - approx. 4 x 8) Or use muffin tins– GREAT for travel as they do not go bad as quickly as a loaf.1/2 cup dry oatbran 1 egg4oz tofu (soft or silken)1 cup canned diced tomatoes (drained)1/2 cup green pepper1/2 cup grated zucchinioregano (to taste)garlic powder (to taste)salt & pepper (to taste)20 drops sweetener (or less or none)Mix all ingredients together. Bake at 350 degrees for about 45 minutes. (VARIATION for protein: I use tofu to spread my eggs over the week, you can use 2 eggs in place of egg and tofu. You can use egg whites in place of eggs, 2 egg whites = 1 egg, so could use 2 egg whites and tofu OR 4 egg whites. Last option, use liquid egg whites in place of eggs, ¼ c = 1 egg, so could use ¼ c liquid egg whites and tofu OR ½ c liquid egg whites)variations: first the egg, tofu, and grains are always the same so I'm not going to list them with the variations.1 cup diced tomato1 cup green pepper, chili peppers & onionschili powder (to taste)cumin (to taste)salt & pepper1 cup chopped broccoli1 cup grated zucchini, celery, onion (mostly zucchini)poultry seasoning (or whatever you would have used to spice stuffing for a turkey)salt & pepper1 cup pumpkin1 cup grated carrots or zucchini1/4 teas pumpkin pie spice or 1/2 teas cinnamon Pancakes ½ c oat bran 1/3 c powdered skim milk 1 egg 4 oz. Silken Tofu 1 oz. Apple Sauce 20 drops sweetener (or to your taste or none at all) ½ t. cinnamon Combine all together and cook in pancake pan or do smaller ones in a sprayed skillet. Add 5oz. Of fruit to the batter if you want everything in your pancake. Have 5 oz. Of fruit on the side or warmed up and on top of pancakes for complete breakfast Could use 1t. canola oil in place of apple sauce and then have 6oz. Fruit VARIATION: Omit 1/3 c powdered milk and use 1 cup yogurt with the fruit on top of pancake. (VARIATION for protein: I use tofu to spread my eggs over the week, you can use 2 eggs in place of egg and tofu. You can use egg whites in place of eggs, 2 egg whites = 1 egg, so could use 2 egg whites and tofu OR 4 egg whites. Last option, use liquid egg whites in place of eggs, ¼ c = 1 egg, so could use ¼ c liquid egg whites and tofu OR ½ c liquid egg whites) (1 starch, 1 protein, 1 fruit, 1 dairy, ½ t. spice) Pumpkin Custard 1 c. teff 6 oz. Cooked pumpkin (in can or fresh) 1 c. skim milk 2 eggs 20 drops sweetener (or less or none) ½ t. cinnamon ¼ t. nutmeg Or ½ t. pumpkin pie spice Oven should be at 350 degrees. Spray glass pie dish with safe cooking spray Press teff into bottom of pie dish Mix milk, eggs, sweetener and spices together Pour over teff Bake in oven about 40 minutes I like to chill this in refrigerator overnight, but some eat it warm. Have heard 1 cup millet works as crust also, have not tried that yet. Complete breakfast: 1 grain, 1 fruit, 1 milk, 1 protein (so yes, eat the whole thing) FRUIT CUSTARD VARIATION: Instead of pumpkin, use 6 oz. Any fruit to make a FRUIT custard. I use 6oz. Fresh pineapple, strawberries and blueberries – just use cinnamon as the spice – its very good. Still prefer it chilled. Tuna Cole Slaw 4 oz. Tuna 1 c. peas 2 cups shredded cabbage, diced onions, diced red peppers, diced celery ½ t. celery seed ½ t. basil ¼ t. sea salt ¼ t. pepper 1 T. mayo (or less) 1 T. yogurt 1 T. mustard Mix all together and eat cold I prefer to use 1 cup brown rice in place of peas Others have used 1 cup black beans, could really use any bean here! (1 protein, 1 starch, 2 raw veggies, 1 fat, 2 T. condiments, 1 ½ t. spice)
Guest guest
So far so good - I've only been able to do it one week though. Last Wednesday I worked from home where it was peaceful and quiet - and after lunch I lay down and took a nap. Now if I could only do that every day..............(They've put in lactation rooms at work for nursing moms - now we need nap rooms for tired moms and dads) Beth > > > Stress and fatigue are my main triggers. > > > > Beth > > I hear you! Guest guest
hi ron, i have an allergy to pork. its not as bad as it used to be. i can tolerate a serving of pork, but if i have pork more than once every week or two, i begin to have some issuese. i had a biggie reaction to a ceaser salad on friday night. i was aware that the dressing had a splash (at most) of anchovy (sp?) oil, but i didn't think it would bother me. oops. i was wrong - LOL sorry you're having trouble with your new provider. when i changed my providers, my dr's office has to periodically call and remind them to send the needles and such (i do the shots at the office, but they don't generally stock the types of syringes i need). i hope they get the problem resolved quickly heather ronaldcrpntr <cowtrail@...> wrote: Has anyone heard of a food allergy to pork? It seems lately every time my wife eats pork she get an extreme upset stomach. They just switched my xolair Pharmacy provider from curascript to Precision RX. I Am having some problems, I self inject so need syringes, needles, etc. Precision RX is having a problem with that concept and has promised twice to send the " stuff " (I got the Xolair), so far nothing. This time the promised date is Wednesday, we will see. Hope everybody had a wonderful Christmas Ron
