need help to interpret MRI results

My son Jimmy (just turned 9) began seeing Dr. Goldberg about three months

ago. In addition to a diagnosis of " atypical " autism, he has a diagnosis

of mild cerebral palsy. Dr. Goldberg told us during our initial visit that

researchers now are thinking that some cerebral palsy is viral related.

Jimmy had the usual pattern of chronic ear problems from birth and was on

an antibiotic for three years non-stop. Jimmy's initial bloodwork didn't

show any viral titers, but Dr. Goldberg said that Jimmy may still have

immune system dysfunction.

Anyway..........Dr. Goldberg ordered an MRI to see whether there is any

brain damage or other causes of Jimmy's problems.

We have received the results, but won't be able to get any interpretation

for several weeks. Our next consult with Dr. Goldberg is in August. I

don't think our pediatrician can interpret the results from a

perspective. Is there anyone on this list who could provide any insight?

The MRI results are as follows: " Several punctate foci of hyperintensity

in the gray-white junctions bilaterally. Differential diagnosis includes

gliosis, secondary to previous inflammatory process such as a viral illness

or possibly secondary to an entity such as neurofibromaosis. "

From what I can interpret, this means there is something akin to scar

tissue or other damage, but the reference to a previous inflammatory

process such as a viral illness is unexplained. Is this an indication that

a diagnosis may be appropriate? Has anyone else had similar MRI

results? Is any of this condition reversible?

Any help would be appreciated.

As a neuroradiologist I can tell you that most white matter changes are

non-specific and quite common. However, if the lesions are large or numerous

they may have some significance. You can e-mail privately to discuss.
