Your son's recovery

Tom,

After all your paperwork is in, call Laurie (the office manager) and she can put

you on the cancellation list. My son started with Dr. G just before his 5th

b-day. We were doing almost everything you were doing. Most of the stuff we

did was so we wouldn't have guilt later, because I never thought my son could be

normal. He was so bizarre when he was the same age as yours. As you know, my

son is recovered now.

This recovery takes time. My kid was almost there in third grade, but not

completely on his own until fifth grade. You are not too late. Just keep doing

what you are doing. After Dr. G, you will see the ABA working so much faster.

You just have to use every spare moment to work.

For us summer time was our big work time. When other kids were playing, we were

working while we played. My kid always gained in the summer when normal kids

lost what they learned at school over the summer months.

Educational computer games made by Edmark were wonderful because they are all

linguistically based. So when your kid is doing Millie's Math House, he is also

learning math and language. My favorite game is still Thinking Things. The

computer was just another therapist in our house, one I didn't have to pay or

encourage him to work with. A lot of our kids love computer, so use it.

started on it when he was two. Use the things they love to help them

succeed. Maurice once told me that. Physical things were very

difficult for when he was young. So we would set up obstacle course where

his reward was computer at the last station.

I too always felt that sense of urgency because Kindergarten was coming and I

felt I needed to have him all done before school started. But it didn't happen.

That sense of urgency is important to their recovery, because it makes you work

harder at ABA. But remember they have to be kids too. With my son I had so

many people coming in and out of my house to help him, there were times I

cancelled everyone for a week, just because I needed to be mommy and not his

therapist.

Can you delay Kindergarten another year? It is best if he is the oldest and not

the youngest in school. This also gives you more time for Dr. G and ABA to

work.

Of course you worry constantly and are afraid that yours will never make it.

Then one day after time you start to relax more, because even though you are not

there yet, you know he will be okay.

We also did supplements, OT, Speech and ABA in the beginning. But in time, all

we needed to be doing is Dr. G and ABA to catch him up. Diet, lots of water (

he didn't drink much) and exercise were key for . For some reason in the

early years, he was always better in the summer and after swimming. OT was good

because he was interacting with other adults and exercising. Our kids don't

move like other kids because they are ill. But the same can be accomplished at

a pool or playing on equipment with them at a park. You have to make them

interact with stuff around them and start moving like other kids. Some OT

people are better at this than us, and it is a scheduled time so we do it.

Just keep talking to him, whether or not he gives you any indication that he

understands you. (This was the hardest thing for me to do, because I felt I was

talking to myself and got no reaction from ) I was not until after he was

better that I realized he had understood me even though he never showed it. We

will all be there to help you. You are not alone. I felt so scared and

completely alone when we went through this. I'll be gone until Thurs, but call

after then if you need to talk.

Hi Everyone - I made a mistake when I posted this - sorry! I intended this

note to go to and not the whole group. Sorry for the confustion!

- if you could respond to this either to me personally or via web, I'd

appreciate it!

> Hi - I have an autistic son and have been doing the nids protocol with Dr

for 3 years now. I love to read your posts on the nids board - they are

always so encouraging and I learn so much from them! When I read your

description of your son from 18 months ago, I felt like you were describing my

son in so many ways! I think you said that your son suffered seizures, however,

and my son doesn't (he had a clear EEG when he was 2). Were you suggesting that

anti-seizure meds would be helpful even if you didn't have seizures?

>

> We have an appointment with Dr next week and I wondered if you minded

sharing with me what all you have done with your son so I could talk with Dr

about doing some of those things. I know you do high dose probiotics,

but I don't know how much is a high dose and which brand do you use? I also

remember you do ibuprofen therapy for inflamation, but again I don't know how

much you do there.

>

> My son is 7 now and I really hoped we would be further down the 'recovery

road' by now. When you talked about your son wandering around the house not

knowing what to do, that is so my son and I hate that nothing really brings him

pleasure except stimming on rewinding the video over and over!

>

> I hope you don't mind me emailing you, but from the tone of your message

posts, I figured you'd be glad to help. Thank you for your encouragement!
