Guest guest
Bella, You are never barging in when you are trying to help your child. The reason I posted this conversation to the list is so it might help others that are going thought what Sue was experiencing. But when I did post, I was referring to the die-off from the antifungal medicines like Nizoral, Diflucan and Lamisol. For my child the die-off reaction from the antifungals has always been severe. I dread end of the six month period when it is time to switch anifungals. It is necessary to switch every six months so the child doesn't build up a tolerance to the medication and it continues to be effective. I have read on the list that some people have die-off to the Valtrex or Famvir, but my son was not one of them. But it is important to note that my child started the antivirals much later in his treatment, after he was much improved. Initially, I was under the impression that they didn't do much, but I was wrong. We had been on Valtrex for a few years when we moved into a new house. In the chaos of moving, I forgot to refill my son's Valtrex. Within days, I witnessed my son exhibit " very autistic behaviors " that I hadn't seen for years. Fortunately, I quickly started the Valtrex again and within a week my son was back. It is funny that as parents we tend to not notice the improvements our children make, but definitely see when they are going backwards. The changes are sometimes so subtle, that we forget where we started. So when you go into that panic we all feel when we think our child is not improving fast enough, try to sit back and list in your head all the small changes they have made. When my child was in elementary school and still receiving assistance at school, each year I would write a note to the new teacher listing all the things still needed to learn. The time I would notice most how far we had come was when I would look at last year's list to see what was left to do. The year he entered fifth grade, it was no longer necessary to write that note to the teacher. Although sometimes a little quirky, was there. is now 13, gets straight " A's " except for art. He is in all the accelerated classes without any assistance. As a matter of fact his friends and teachers have no idea he was ever diagnosed autistic. The recovery wouldn't have happened without Dr. G, ABA, and the hard work it took to teach him the things other kids just seemed to learn effortlessly. Maurice once gave me some very good advice, she said use what your child likes to motivate him to do the things that are hard for him. For that was computers. I considered the computer another ABA therapist. (One I didn't have to pay). Our kids love the predictable because their worlds are so confusing. Computers are that. The Edmark programs like Thinking Things,Millie's Math House, Sammy's Science House etc. are all linguistically based. Our children are learning language, math, and other subjects without even knowing it because they are so fun to do. I have lots of info to share if any of you new parents need it, just email me and I will forward the info that put in an email for me. I, unlike am not a Bill Gates, and rely on him for all my computer needs. I just have one question: does everybody have a die off reaction? My daughter has been on Valtrex for 7 days and I did not notice any die off reaction, but I did notice that her tantrums became shorter and she became much calmer. Just lucky or Valtrex does not work? Die Off Sue, The die of usually occurs after days to two weeks. It is like all the autistic symptoms are ten times worse. Die off is awful. It is especially difficult because you feel like you are going backwards. But after die off, you see a kid that is much clearer. The silly and drunken behavior starts to go away. Now they can learn to stop pinching or biting. (Or whatever your child does. Before it was impossible to teach) I tried the pills myself just to see what it was like. You feel like PMS times twenty. During that time we didn't do any thing complicated. They feel sick. Tylenol helps along with doing things they find relaxing. If it is really bad call Dr. G. He may tell you to either increase or decrease the dosage. You can also use some activated charcoal, but be careful when you give it, because it will absorb all medications too. Hope that helps. Our daughter didn't have a die-off reaction to anything she's taken. But, we've seen steady improvements. I think for some kids it's a slower die-off which makes for a less traumatic time. , mom to (12) - AS Jeanette (10) Marissa (6) Emma (4) - ASD
