Guest guest
not sure how to censor this so I'm just going to post it and hope I don't offend any of the men here...I am 44 and still having a period each month...priod to dx in July I stopped taking the pill and didn't get a period for 3 months - that is what prompted me to get a physical and that is where they found the blasts...anyway - my question is this - I had a period 2 weeks ago that came on with a vengence and now I've got it again...I contacted my Onc. to see if I could go back on the pill to regulate the periods and she decided instead to put me on estrogen...I have read that estrogen can speed up the growth of some types of cancer...so I'm nervous about taking it..I have spoken to the pharmacist at the cancer clinic and he said that the birth control pill will not interact with the Gleevac...should I question the doctor again on this...I spoke to her nurse and she said that she wants me on the estrogen for a month to help normalize the periods, but I have had this problem in the past and that is why I was put on the pill in the first place...any suggestions! Guest guest
Hi Cheryl - In addition to having CML, I am a 22 year breast cancer survivor. My physicians over the years have been very clear that estrogen use would likely be highly detrimental and that I should not be on any form of estrogen on a long term basis. If your doctor is only wanting to use estrogen for one month to regulate your periods, and your pharmacist confirms it will not impact the Gleevec, it may be okay for one month, but long term use would likely not be in your best interests. I work for a women's health website, www.empowher.com, and if you would like to post your question there we should be able to tap into other women and some medical experts who can assist you. I would also be happy to try to help you with this personally outside of this group. Guest guest
Pat...thanks for your response...I spent all of yesterday in Emerg with heavy periods and what I thought was hemoraging...the ER doctor did the CBC and ultrasound and prescribe a birth control pill instead of the estrogen...said that he was surprised the Onc. would go that way - because it probably was making the bleeding worse...hemoglobin was down to 77 - had transfusion of 4 pints - after 2 it was only up to 90 - he thought it would be higher but said I was probably bleeding it out as fast as they were putting it in...also found a bladder infection which he gave me meds for...he conferred with a Gyno on call, but he said double dose the birth control first and let her get stablized before a possible uterin ablasion or d & c...I'm feeling much better today, but still bleeding quite a bit - I will be discussing this with the specialist on Tuesday when we meet with him... Here's hoping I don't bleed out by then! Guest guest
Hi Cheryl: Oh My Gosh!! You do not need all this going on with trying to get to see the specialist. Just hang in there, and do one thing at a time. Dr. Lipton might even have some suggestions to help all these other problems your having. I will be looking for your post to see how your appointment went. God Bless and Take Care From: thornton_cheryl <thornton_cheryl@...> Subject: [ ] Re: for the women here...
