I doubt that the body every produced 1 mg or iron. The body is normally very intelligent in managing iron. It even conserves and keeps iron when red blood cells die. That indicates how critical iron actually is to the blood and the body. The hemocrits vary from one person to the other. Even normal ranges vary from one blood lab to the other. Older people with organs that do not function efficiently, damaged or missing organs, and generally compromised body chemistry will have more problems that young healthy people with proper blood components. Give the devil his dues and point the finger in the right direction. Iron is the most abundant mineral in our food. Unless one has the worse diet in the world, he should get enough iron. I have never taken any iron supplement in my life. ( not intentionally, maybe some accidently ) Proper Iron Metabolism is another story.
