side effects with Plaquenil

Hello,

I just joined this group recently. I was recently diagnosed with

Sjogren's and R.A, but before that for about nine years I was

diagnosed with Fibromyalgia and CFIDS, since no autoimmune disease

showed up in my bloodwork. Anyway, I just started Plaquenil and I

have had a problem with severe insomnia from the day I started it. I

have a problem with sleep anyway so I take medications for that and I

know that sometimes it's worse than other times. But this is

obviously related to the Plaquenil because I am not sleeping *at all*

for nearly four days now and that is not usual for me.

My doctor -rheumatologist- claimed when I called his office that this

couldn't be from the drug since it takes " months " to get into your

system. That makes no sense to me. I've been on a few dozen

medications over the years if not hundreds and I know that a

medication when it goes into your body can immediately have side

effects. So I was just wondering if anyone else had experienced this

problem with Plaquenil. I've heard a lot of good things about this

medication so I am still taking it, but if this continues I'll have

to go off of it or at least cut the dosage down a lot.

I'd appreciate any info you have.

Thanks,

Jen in Florida

i really believe that everyone is a bit different... and that what makes one fall aslep, cases another to get really hyper. have a very old friend like that.. when the docs give her a sedative.. she is climbing the walls. i think i would ask him if i could cut it back and see what happens. i'd be just a hair adamant. i take it.. have for about 4 or 5 years, and am ok with it except my eyes are a bit harder to focus, but i am over 75 and that may have something to do with that <g>

Hi, Jen,

I tried Plaquenil a short time. It is an older drug that was used for

malaria and can effect the eyes. It gave me bad headaches behind my eyes

and did not work for me.

Sorry, I don't remember a sleep problem. Maybe it does not mix well with

your meds to sleep. Just a thought.
