Guest guest
Thanks for that info , there is a health food store less than 1/2 mile from me, I am wondering if I can get it there, if not, something similar. I would stand up all night and try and sleep rather than put up with acid reflux, I am so thankful I have a bed I can adjust without putting books under the legs !! bobby From: hey00nanc <ncogan@...> Subject: [ ] Re: side effect/Ariad Date: Saturday, November 28, 2009, 1:47 PM  > > Hi everyone, I told my trial nurse I was having a lot of acid reflux. I have had it for years, and take Prevacid for it. She said it is one of the side effects of Ariad. i did not know that, and even went for an endoscopy to have things checked out.  And here I was changing my diet and trying to figure out why it was so prevalent, and it's the drug. Just thought I would mention it, as I am always bragging about this wonderful drug that gives me NO side effects.... ____________ _________ _______ Hi Bobby and others interested in this topic, When I was on 800mg Gleevec for about 5 years (waiting for a new drug) I had quite a bit of acid reflux. When I had an endoscopy, the doc said I had esaphagitis (inflammation of the esaphagus) and gastritis (inflammation of the stomach lining). I was quite a mess in his opinion and he wanted me to take Rx Prevacid (I think that was the one). My acid reflux was so bad that many mornings I would vomit a small amount of stomach juices. On the other hand, my oncology naturopath said that it was NOT good to take these meds, because they reduced the 'normal' stomach acid that you needed to digest food. All these drugs are acid, so we are dumping more acid into our stomach when we take them. The better route is to offset the acid with more alkaline foods or drinks. The product that I took that really turned this around for me was Acid Defense by Garden of Life. It is a powder that I dissolved in water and drank every PM before bed and every AM. (I am not sure that they are still making this product, there was a problem with it caking in it's container when it was not used on a regular basis). BUT basically it is an alkalizing formula that you can get in many ways. This made such a quick and huge difference for me that even Dr. Druker's nurse Carolyn started telling other patients about this product. When I had a follow-up endoscopy one year later, I did not have any of the previous problems (esaghagitis, gastritis) and that doctor assumed (incorrectly) that I was using the Prevacid. It is really important to have an alkaline diet to offset the acid we keep dumping into our systems with these drugs. I rarely have a problem now (but I am on Sprycel). There are many greens drinks that you can use to help these, they are all alkaline. The one I use the most is called Greens First (it is comparable to 10 servings of fruits and veggies). Sometimes if my stomach has been bothering me a little bit I will even use a green drink with my meal. The other thing that acid reflux does is cause tooth cavities and dental problems. I was getting small cavities at the base of some teeth that the dentist said was from acid reflux. This has stopped also. I was even using Tums a lot before, and now I never do (this was OK with Gleevec, at a different time than the med). So, this is a different approach to consider.... than taking another med. If you can find " Acid Defense " by Garden of Life it is definitely worth a try. C.
Guest guest
Thanks , I have found a store within 4 miles of here and will go buy Active Defense tomorrow. Tee Hee, I hope it tastes good. Dr. T told me Miralax had no taste, but it does, so I mixed it with Metamucil !! Gee, that worked real well! Guest guest
Bobby, Is it possible to add and consume more dark green veggies without the added sugar salad dressings? Like steamed broccoli to your diet, green beans, Swiss Chard, or Kale steamed, and or sauteed with extra-virgin olive oil, and add 1 mashed garlic clove to the dark green leafy veggies. These will reduce your acid-reflux, and keep your body more alkaline. Drink plenty of good quality water, as you take you medication too! You can also use lemons in your water, as you take your meds to keep ones body more alkaline.
