Guest guest
Cheryl, When I was on Gleevec my hair really thinned out initially as well--my poor shower drain had to be cleaned out almost daily. I also started getting more grey hair. But, that did stabilize after awhile. I definitely did not turn fully grey. And, as my body adjusted to the Gleevec, the hair loss slowed down. I know we're not the only ones with this reaction and I'm sure I've read here the suggestion to use Nioxin shampoo which can really help. Beth [ ] kind of a weird question... Â Ok - could just be my vanity - I know that Gleevec can cause a pale-face...but can it also cause your hair to turn grey...I'm 44 and had a few greys that I hid with hair-dye...but since being on the Gleevec it seems that I am getting alot of grey hairs and my hair is thinning but only the brown ones seem to be falling out!!! I know that this shouldn't be a priority in my thinking right now...but on this drug I feel that I look like I've aged 10 years in just 6 weeks...any suggestions??? Guest guest
Cheryl, Was 47 when diagnosed and was on Gleevic only a couple of weeks if that long was switched to Sprycel and had some hair thinning and used Nioxin shampoo and scalp therapy have for many years. The thinning did subside but feel like I had aged some 10 yearsin the facial features (but maybe again maybe was that time in my life for this to happen). The hair loss well cannot say for sure is because of the medicine or hereditary but there are many others that had the hair loss. First and foremost remind your self daily that you are here and will be here to enjoy your life and avoid mirrors LOL. And concentrate on what is most important. (vanity may have to go by the wayside) I can easily say this because I was miss Dx'd for over 6 mths by numerous Dr's in the beginning and knew if I went to sleep one more day I was not going to wake up was fighting to staying awake. Did not have the strength to open a closed door. My daughter and I reversed rolls and that is a very humbling position to say the least. At the time I had a beautiful 5 mth old granddaughter and was not going to watch her grow up. Was not going to be here to spend time with my children (that were 23 and 24) She is now 3 and a half and she has a baby brother that is 10 months old. Being here for my children and grandbabies is all I prayed for. All that kept me going. Of course only by the grace of God. Drink lots of water (gallon a day if you can) get you a very good face moisturizer as well as body moisturizer. The skin tends to get annoyingly dry. And be careful with cuts and scraps when your white counts are low as small things can get infected easily. I was pulling weeds (few mths after Dx') and a piece of grass cut my finger I didn't think much of it at the time but that evening it was already red and oozing. Always clean a cut immediately and watch it. Healing process of things are rather slow. Feel free to write me anytime. I read post most everyday. I can only share my experience but there are others on here that can explain the medical technology as well as decipher your labs. Or suggest specialist... This is an awesome group. Always ask questions the only dumb question is the one not asked. You probably will not ask a question that most on here haven't already asked but someone will answer as we have all been through it. Guest guest
Hi Cheryl. I was diagnosed in May of 2009. I was 36 years old. I experienced the same thing with my hair. I think that I lost about 1/2 the volume of my hair before it slowed down. I started using the Nioxin products about 6 weeks ago and noticed a HUGE difference. I barely lose any now. And, I do see new growth. I am not sure if that will stay but it is there. I hope you are doing well. Guest guest
Hi Cheryl- I totally understand what your going though! I've been on gleevec since July 08, I've tolerated it relatively well but my hair has fallen out, gotten thinner all over, I can notice in the front like male pattern baldness and the texture is now baby fine. If it is any consolation it hasn't gotten any worse after the first year. I've tried rogain, nioxin but I persoally like a product called more hair by herbal glo, you might be able to find it at your local health food store or go to their website. I struggled with the vanity thing too, but it's real and what we are feeling, so be it. Karyn Sent from my iPhone
Guest guest
Is the Nioxin something you have to get by prescription or something that can be found in a store...might be good to try it...right now I'm using baby-shampoo because of the rash issues.. Guest guest
You can get the Nioxin at most beauty salons. I had a rash (bumps that hurt to touch) on the scalp arms legs back. this too will go away. Did not do much for it other than avoid touching felt like someone sticking me with pins if I bumped one. But many said the rash and all the other side effects was to be considered the chemo killing the cancer cells. The side effects will subside if not go away all together just not soon enough when you are going through it. ________________________________ From: thornton_cheryl <thornton_cheryl@...> Sent: Wed, January 6, 2010 9:34:19 AM Subject: [ ] Re: kind of a weird question... Guest guest
Lots of beauty stores carry it. Google it and check out locations near you. They also have a vitamin which I found was great. Guest guest
I have found that Ulta has a huge selection of products. I am not sure where you are at but you can buy it online at their store if you don't have one near you. It is a 3 step system. A shampoo, conditioner and a scalpy treatment. Nioxin makes several different product lines for different types of hair.(ie, curly, fine, thick, etc) Good luck! > > > > > > Ok - could just be my vanity - I know that Gleevec can cause a pale-face...but can it also cause your hair to turn grey...I'm 44 and had a few greys that I hid with hair-dye...but since being on the Gleevec it seems that I am getting alot of grey hairs and my hair is thinning but only the brown ones seem to be falling out!!!
