diet and RA

I also can atest to the diet change.....and it works to keep the pain away.

I "usually" do not eat bleached sugars or bleached flour and i drink a gallon of water a day.

You will find bleached sugars and bleached flour in almost all processed foods.....so i make every thing from scratch.

Also green peppers make me hurt and aspartman sweetner and the pink stuff....so i stay away from the pink and blue stuff.

I try to excercise daily......light weights one day, bike the next, walking the next and rotating them.

I also take handfuls of supplements..........I am 48 .......diagnosed in my mid 30s with RA and I am on no meds...........and doing well :>)

Just wanted to say that diet change does work to ease the pain......in my case....it keeps the pain away along with excercise and supplements and a gallon of water daily.

thanks for sharing this, Trish... wish more RA victims would at least try a change for 3 months, if for nothing else than to prove us wrong! <grin>!!!!

Ida, you are right... each individual is somewhat different. i was born in 1928 and before i even started school, i was in pain in my armes and legs but back then during the depression, po folks didn't go to Dr and i learned to live with the pain. Even when i grew up the dr's couldn't make up their minds what it was and just decided i 'had a nervous condition' ... one dr even prescribed valium and God knows i don't need that stuff.. i took it for two days and realized what it was doing to me and quit. my daughter is a nurse and it really upset her when i told her that i was told to take it as she had done a research on it for her thesis and knew what it would do.

i got disgusted being treated like i was a hypochondriac and just wouldn't go to a dr but about once every 5 or 6 years but learned nothing accept that i may possibly be neurotic...

in my later years they decided it was probably fibromaligia, and also have peripheral neurotomy (sp?) and i finally i got tired of GP's and referrred myself to a rhuemy and since a gp hadn't referred me, he was sceptical.. but after the tests etc.. realized that it was pretty certain RA.

one can get used to a lot of pain.. as i am sure you are so aware of... in fact i can hurt myself and not even know it until a bruise or blood appears as i hurt so much all the time that i don't always notice an extra bit of pain <grin> aint i lucky??? <grin> but i am able to walk better since i changed my eating agenda and thankful for that. i got bit by a big...i mean BIG.. parrot one time at the zoo and it horrified my grandson and family thinking how painful it was as it did leave a very bad tear and whelt but i just stood there looking at it, rubbed it a bit and went on.

I do agree that diet helps to reduce the pain tho i m not in any certain diet but i do avoid foods that cud trigger the pain ( thru my experience) but one thing that u have to know, as many think of Rheumatoid Arthritis as a ‘set pattern’ homogenous disease dealing out the same cards to all it attacks. as i have suffered from RA since my juvenile years, the pain growing worst when i m getting older as now i m also suffered from osteoarthritis. so u see, we cant just compare my level of pain with other ppl 's level of pain who has only been dignosed months or a few years ago.

Its not that i nvr want to quit on taking steroid. I tried everything that may substitute the drug, but it always come back to square one. i only started taking steroid after 3 yrs been dignosed of RA. at that time, it attacked my left hip joint, they tried everything and it only worked with steroid finally.

now that i m on the first line of DMARDs, ie mtx, i think it does improve my Ra abit. even tho the deformities remained but i rarely have swollen joint anymore except for the knee ( its more to mechanical pain/osteoarthritis tho)

Suzie,

I have found that, for me, diet does not seem to affect my RA.

However, stress can cause a flare that will put me down for days

until high doses of Prednisone gets it under control.
