I have a tooth infection that is not healing although I am on pen VK. Could it be the Humira?

Thanks,

The nurse is correct. 10 mg of MTX is a low dos-- 2 tabs. The blood work you

have to get periodically (mine is every 2 months) will tell the doctor if your

immune system is becoming too depressed but the purpose of the drug is to

depress the immune system in order to ameliorate the effects of the disease. I

have taken MTX for 12 years and a considerable higher dose and have no problems.

Hi Pat,

Thanks for your comments; they're encouraging. You've had no

infections at all in 12 years? No flu or bad colds that wouldn't go

away because of the MTX? No sinus, UTI, or yeast probs?

Thanks,

Sierra

Hello,I took my first dose of MTX Thursday evening, and it went just fine. Because of my history of sensitivity to meds, I took 5 mg instead of the prescribed 10 mg. (I called and asked the nurse about that idea; she tried to assure me that 10 mg. is a low lose. I'm sure she's right, but nearly every other med I've taken at the prescribed dose has been too strong for me.)I'm curious about how many of you have experienced various infections due to the immunosuppression? One of the reasons I was nervous about starting it was because a few months ago, a co-worker told me about a friend who was in the hospital because of a bad respiratory infection related to her MTX. (The co-worker did not know I have RA.) Sierra

Sierra,

The only problem I have with it is the first few months I have no energy. I have been on it again for 5 weeks and I am not taking a dose this weekend so I can get some house work and put my garden into the ground. I tend to sleep or stare at the TV otherwise - enough energy to breath and go to the bathroom.

Have fun,

I have had absolutely no infections in the 12 years I've been on MTX. But one time my internist had me on an antibiotic for what he thought was an ear infection but when it didn't improve I mentioned it to my rheumy. He told me to cut back on salsalate (an aspirin derivative) and 4 days later the symptoms went away. The ear problems were due to a side effect of the other drug the rheumy had me on. In all fairness though I have to say that I have never been prone to infections so maybe that has something to do with my not having any with MTX.

Your tooth infection may not be healing properly because of the Humira. I am under the impression that if you have an infection you are not supposed to give yourself a shot. I might be wrong, but if I were you I'd call my rheumy and ask him.

Same with me. At least 5 years (need a journal to keep track) and no

infections at from 15 to 22 mg. It's less now with the Arava but all

winter people I work with have been getting all kinds of infections

and I seem to have ducked them. Of course I did have a flu shot.

The drug was salsalate which is an aspirin derivative. Aspirin and its derivatives can cause ringing in the ears, difficulty hearing, a feeling of congestion --- all of which went away when I stopped taking it. Following doctors orders I went back on it but at a lower dose than before. I've had no more problems with it -- or the ears! :-)

Yes, MTX is methotrexate. It works for some but not for me. My liver enzymes shot up and I could not tolerate it.

My RD says that lung involvement with Methotrexate is a rare but sometimes

difficult side effect. You should not take any chances but let both your RD and

PCP know about it. God bless.

Thanks Kay.

This is all so new to me and I am trying to learn as much as I can. But, truthfully, I am learning more about it than I ever wanted to know! Half the time I think my doctor has a wrong diagnosis...even though the blood test was positive the first time.

One thing I haven't seen anywhere is radiating pain. Is that a typical thing? As in pain also in my palm or going toward the wrist...then it stops. It never lasts long but is sharp.

My doc has me on MTX, though a very low dose of 2.5. I have no idea yet if it is working or even what it is supposed to do. My fingers are still very hard to flex. I also have a trigger finger-like popping and locking sometimes. What's with that?

I see my doctor again (first time since the diagnosis on June 1st and I have a list of questions for her then.

Jacy,

I have been having some radiation pain just above my left wrist at night. Sounds like what you described. It really hurts bad but for a short time. I call it the RA attacking. I have lidocaine patches I can stick where it hurts and they help.

They tried MTX on me and I had a bad time with it. Caused bleeding and made liver enzymes shoot up.

I have the trigger finger problem and joints locking also. Saw a hand surgeon but he did not talk much. I made apt. with another one. Trying to get nerve up to having surgery on my right hand.

I will have to remember the lidocaine patch.

I see the doc on June 1 for another blood test and to see how I am reacting to the drugs.

I have Diclofenac (anti-inflammatory) for the pain but I hate to take it. I makes me lightheaded and I don't like that feeling at all. Guess I will have to wait until the test results to see how things are working...

I developed the trigger finger thing in both thumbs last spring. I had an appointment with my doctor around that time anyway, and when I asked him what to do, he was pretty vague. He ran through the options, including surgery, and said that sometimes it resolves itself. So.....I started forcing my thumbs to move every morning when I got up, and I would feed my dogs, eat breakfast, and do dishes slowly, in hot water, right away. I could move my thumbs then, and I'd move them a bunch and keep it up all day. Every time they locked up again, I'd try the hot water and movement. Gradually, it eased up, and by July it was gone, except for a slight "clicking" in my right thumb, which I think has always been there. I don't know if I was just one of the lucky ones or if my self-imposed "therapy" worked, but something did, and it seemed to make it better when I would use the hot water and force it to move.

I have had it resolve itself a few times too. But once it locked closed and it was surgery or not move it at all. Very painful.

Do you know if it is related to RA ?

(I called and asked the nurse about that idea; she tried to assure me that 10 mg. is a low lose. I'm sure she's right, but nearly every other med I've taken at the prescribed dose has been too strong for me.)I'm curious about how many of you have experienced various infections due to the immunosuppression? One of the reasons I was nervous about starting it was because a few months ago, a co-worker told me about a friend who was in the hospital because of a bad respiratory infection related to her MTX. (The co-worker did not know I have RA.) Sierra

It's very common with RA -- there's a tube that the main tendon goes through, and when you bend your finger, the tendon moves up and down. When it becomes inflamed(which *is* common with RA), it catches in that tube and that's why it won't move and you hear that popping/cracking sound if you force it. Sometimes you can get the inflammation down and it doesn't return or only does so sporadically, but other times it just becomes inflamed all over again.

That's a pretty simplified explanation, but it's basically how it works.

I have had it resolve itself a few times too. But once it locked closed and it was surgery or not move it at all. Very painful.

Do you know if it is related to RA ?

That's really what I meant to say, but didn't quite get there. The relationship is that it's inflammation, which of course is what RA is. So in that respect, it's related.

I use Lodine XL for anti-inflammatory. It is one of the older ones and I read was easier on the stomach than some of the newer ones. You might try it.
