I know when I worked in PICU we had a 2 yo with no source of infection that came

in with a septic arthritis in his hip....It was MRSA...

I'm with you in that many people are really pooh poohing MRSA....Some facilities

don't even isolate for it...Others don't have visitors gown, etc....That is why

I'm looking so hard to get out of the situation that I am in.

I do think for most people it isn't an issue, but for our kids...who knows????

typically has more trouble with viruses...so should I worry....but then

when you think of this fall and he had pseudomonas folliculitis from ?hot tub at

my parents....and none of us had any lesions, it does make you worry and makes

you realize that we just don't know when and where our kids are going to come

into contact with something that they can't handle.

I personally think there is way more MRSA out there then is realized. I think

many people are colonized and have no symptoms....especially in your more

crowded areas...IE large metropolitan areas, reservations, etc....

There was just an article here in our newspaper about alcohol hand sanitizers in

schools. I think some schools are being a little more proactive, but others

aren't. I agree with you that there is alot more CA MRSA and that it is not

just a nosocomial infection any more.....Could it be that these CA MRSA are

somehow mildly immune compromised???? Maybe that is the answer. Maybe, as the

IDF says, for every 1 pt with an immune deficiency, there are 5 more out

there???? I think that is a thought worth pursuing....but many people think

they need to live with the illnesses...

The CA (community acquired) MRSA concerns me as well...but then there are all

kinds of bugs out there. We can't live in fear either. I try to just do the

best we can. Hope that helps. I'm home today and go to nights tomorrow, so

feel free to call if you want. It's -15 here today and supposed to drop to

-25....and the wind is blowing....I don't really feel like venturing out, but

will probably have to run to the groc store for milk and such. Gotta love ND

winters.

BTW, job interview went well...I should hear on Tues...but they already called

for my references while I was interviewing, so hopefully the pay will be okay

and then I can be done with the hospital.

S---herpes & low NK

I see in the old messages that you have dealt with both the low nk

cells and positive herpes. Our dd (5 yo) has struggled all her life

with health issues and finally in July 2007 was dxed with a mild immune

defiency by her ped (but we don't know what kind specifically) . He put

her on acyclovir, paxil and kept on with the zyrtec, prevacid,

periactin. Then in October, he added Diflucan. She saw him again

yesterday and had come back with a positive herpes virus 6. Her IgG is

a low normal but all IgG subclasses came back normal. She definately

battles fungal and yeast problems as well as food allergies, migraines,

reflux, sensory integration, skin rashes, diahrrea, you get the idea.

What have you found with the connections to herpes and low NK to immune

disorders? Thanks.

I hope the job works out for you. The thing that worries me about MRSA is that

it is everywhere and it is the healthy kids that seem to be getting it. They are

saying that atleast half the cases that are coming into the ER are MRSA now.

That number has gone up 4x since they identified the problem. I think the bigger

problem is that they have not been able to keep up with Antibiotics that will

kill it. My son is allergic to 4 classes of antibiotics so we are on a slippery

slope if he gets a bad infection. We have been very fortunate that he has done

very well with his Ig replacement that he has been on for 9 of his 12 years. He

is sick of it but really has come a long way in understanding why he needs it. I

know when we were at the same Dog visit this week with the Immuno she said to

put Batriban on any little sore to prevent the MRSA. So that is what we are

doing. As well as he wipes down his desk as he sits down when they change

classes. So far so good.
