Guest guest
Hi Bobby, In Australia every March we have " Be Brave and Shave for Leukaemia " . I was dx in July 2007 and in the March 2008 I raised $1,500 and had my mop shaved. I actually found it quite liberating and it took about 3 months to get a fair bit of growth back. I was going to do so again this year, but we have had our property on the market (since Christmas) and have just sold and as the buyers need to get out of their property by the 1st March we need to also! I nearly took to it with the dog clippers the other day (no I hadn't had any vodka LOL), it was such a mop (my kids call it the birds nest) as I hadn't been able to get to my favourite hairdresser to get it cut. So instead of raising funds this year, I am very busy packing up 21 years worth of stuff, trying to be ruthless (very hard) and as we are on 40 acres and have our Labradors as well, need to pack up all our kennels and contents of numerous sheds as well!!! Fortunately my son and daughter in law had just moved into a huge house on 10 acres in the bush, so we are shifting everything there at the moment while we look around for another smaller place to buy. When I was interviewed by the local press about raising the money and going bald, the reporter said how brave I was - I told her I wasn't being brave, I had a choice which many other leukaemia patients of course don't have. I am soooo appreciative of our meds. I signed up , I have not completed my website yet as I need a new picture. I am not asking for your donations, I am asking you, if you didn't see it, to go to the LLS website and read about it. You decide how much you think you can raise, and if you raise it, YOU SHAVE YOUR HEAD! My kids all laugh at me, I wear my hair so short it almost IS bald. I've worn it this way over 20 years. My daughter sent me to her hair dresser to get a new look. On the way there I dropped in at the bar she worked at, had a couple of vodkas, and went for the hair cut. His name was Sam, and talked me into a spiked doo. I think the vodka had a little to do with it. Anyway, he commented on how well it looked so short, and I said, " I would go bald if I could get away with it, I would just wear nice makeup and great big earrings! " He kidded me about it for the next 5 years, and one day I went in and said, " I should be more careful what I wish for, I have been dx with leukemia, and I very well might end up bald, guess I better go get some earrings! " But I never did lose my hair. I have been in 6 trials, plus the Interferon in the early days, and heve never lost one single hair. He, unfortunately has passed away from cancer. So, now I am going to shave it off, get new make up and buy some gorgeous earrings, whether or not I raise the money ( I am trying for $1,000.00, they want a minimum of $250.00) I raised $2000.00 the first tea party I had, $6000.00 the second, and $10,000.00 the last one I had. So I am quite confident I will surpass my goal. I am waiting for my grandson to take a new picture of me and post it on the site, then I will direct you to it, and, ha ha, I will post one when I have finished the fund raiser. This is getting to be a long post, but speaking of fund raisers,I am going to be in NYC in April for a Parkinson's fund raiser, it is a marathon, or some kind of walk in Central Park. My son in law Mickey has Parkinson's, and he and I will participate in wheel chairs!!! Guest guest
Bobby, Last time I shaved my head was over 35 years ago - it was all University Day at Penn State and I think I drank too much really cheap wine- Mad Dog 2020. It was my freshman year in college and yep I went for the really big earrings to accessorize my look. I'm not sure how my bosses around here or my staff will take it but I'm liking the idea of being Totally Baldacious for a cause.   I didn't have eyebrows for a year after being diagnosed and starting gleevec( the anemia has thinned the hair on my head too) so what the heck.  If Booby can do it- I can do it. ________________________________ From: ROBERTA DOYLE <rcd1929@...> < > Sent: Mon, February 8, 2010 7:38:59 PM Subject: [ ] totally baldacious  Hi, did you guys read , in the LLS news letter about the fund raiser, Totally Baldacious? That's all folks! who's got the guts to go bald? check it out, Bobby a ( Bobby ) Doyle, dob 12/17/29 Brecksville, Ohio, USA DX 5/1995 Interferon 9 weeks/Hydroxyurea 5 years 02/2000 to 06/2002 Gleevec trial, OHSU 06/2002 Gleevec/Trisenox Trial, OHSU 06/2003 Gleevec/Zarnestra Trial, OHSU 04/2004 Sprycel Trial, MDACC, CCR in 10 months 04/2008 XL228 Trial, U of Mich. 01/2009 PCR 5.69 04/2009 Ariad Trial AP24534 09/2009 PCR 0.017 11/2009 PCR 0.034 #840 Zavie's Zero Club
