Hi , This is my first post here and I have the same questions as you. I had

my first rods put in when I was 12 1969, the second in 1983. I seem to be now

having a number of problems from constant pain clothes not fitting right, I

think I am developing flat back, but also shortness of breath and that I wasn't

sure if it could be related to scoliosis or something else. I have tried to

stay active but have found it harder and harder to walk up stairs, hike up hill.

shortness of breath

I had the harrington rods put in when I was 14. My curve was 70

degree it now 35. I am 41 years old and everything scoliosis causes

is happening now. Does anyone have severe S.O.B?

I experience shortness of breath with no definitive diagnosis. My

pulmanary function tests came out normal and I almost fell out of my

chair. I thought they would be bad,. I have had a chemical stess

test and my heart is fine. Singulair did nothing for me. The steroid

inhalers do seem to help. I also have fibro and have read that this

can be a problem with that illness. Let us know what your

pulmanolgist thinks of it all.

Best Wishes,

Marti

I haven't been online much so I'm not sure what you all are discussing other

than the feeling that you can't take a deep enough breath. I've not been on

Enbrel but I have that sensation occasionally. I don't know what it is but

I wonder if it's related to anxiety, or some form of hyperventilation? I

wonder if breathing into a paper bag would help. I'm going to try that the

next time I have an episode. I hope I haven't missed the boat here on

what's going on.

Hello, I am new to the group and I have been having SOB too and some

odd back pain that has gradually been getting worse over the past 3

months which I had been forunate to not have had until now. This has

prompted me to seek out this group for support and info. I had

harrington rods when I was 11 years old for a 68 degree curve which

is now at 45 degrees, that was in 1975. Now at 40 years old, I am

feeling weird back pain in there where my left rod is, get tired and

ache-y easier and easier and have trouble breathing when this occurs,

it is scary. I think my old doctor is retired or worse by now and I

am seeking a good, knowledgable doc in NC. b

Hi Cheryl,

I know I am not hyperventiliating because when I take a deep breath and

breathe out, I can't get all the air out and I wheeze. I have been wheezing

now

for the past few months. My allergist heard it yesterday when I went there. I

get alergy injections for allergic rhinitis from dust, pollen, trees, etc.

Have you been keeping up with your PT exercises? If not, you may have

become very weak and that will cause more pain.

If you don't think this could be the cause, then, I think it's time for

a recheck with another scoli specialist. That's my best guess.

It seems rather odd that so many of us are having breathing issues and also

have PA. I haven't read about a correlation but I am going to see if I can

investigate this further. I am not doing well with this feeling either. It

started with me the beginning of April when I went to Florida from NY and has

been bothering me since. My allergist said the mold is quite high in Florida

and

the rain here in NY has been nonstop since then as well.

,

I hope I am as lucky as you. It has been over 120 days and they are still

reviewing my file so hopefully I will hear something soon. My family needs 2

incomes, but I have a hard time just doing my daily routine here at home.

Sometimes it is very frustrating not to be able to contribute to the household

income,

but what I can get from SSD would help out. I know my condition will only get

worse with time and that really stinks. So do you have to go back every so

often for evaluations for SSD??

Thanks for your help,

Sherry

Janet,

I am not sure where I read it, but in an article on autoimmune diseases both

asthma and diabetes are listed along with PA , RA and Thyroid probelms? Keep

us posted on your research.

Thanks,

I've started getting off Paxil and onto Effexer, hoping to stir up some energy

for my body. So presently, I'm 10 gm MTX per week, duragesic patch - 25 mg. and

Vioox 25mg. hope this mixtures holds off pain and encourages some energy.

I've had shortness of breath too (that they haven't figured out yet, and I've

been to a pulmonologist), but I've never had a positive TB test either.

I had a TB test and it was negative. I think the breathing difficulty is

some type of allergic reation to the Enbrel. Mine has not gotten bad enough for

me to give it up.

My allergy doctor just told me that Vioxx causes sob and after I stopped it

improved also.

Gordon:

I would be interested in the costochondritis support group.

Occasionally, when I get a cold and it goes to my chest I am in real

trouble. I need a prescription for hista-vent and an antibiotic

immediately. Is this consistent with costo or is it a continual condition.

I am preparing my history to meet with a new rheumotologist in a couple of

weeks and would like to have myself well informed on the subject.

Thanks for your help.

Hello All,

I have been on the med Arthrotec 75 for several years now for my

PA. In reading your post I have nevr heard Arthortec mentioned. A few

months back I went on Vioxx and even tho it did help with the pain I

started having shortness of breath and holding fluid. I went to my Dr.

and he took me off the Vioxx cause it was the cause for these side

effects. Now I am back on the Arthrotec 75 and no more trouble with

fluid or shortness of breath. Any one else ever have this systom? Also

does any one in the group use Arthrotec 75? It really helps me.

Blessings, Zoella

Hi ,

I was also having trouble with shortness of breath. My allergist told me

that the vioxx I was taking could have that kind of side effect. Hope this is

of some help to you.

That is basically what happened to my mother. I

remember her running to the front door and opening it

to get air in the middle of the night before she knew

what was wrong. She too has the Hiatal Hernia

(however you spell it, sorry for my ignorance). My

mother is one who responded to your request for info

and she doesn't use a computer so I read your results

to her.

She was glad to hear that you had gotten a diagnosis.

She stated that she sleeps up even higher. She uses

several pillows. You may need to add some to keep you

up high enough.

Another point I would like to make is about an article

that was mentioned at this group site about new enzyme

information and p. The article was about enzymes and

p. The article mentioned one enzyme being responsible

for asthma, this enzyme was responsible for

inflamation. Then they went on to explain the 12rlox

and e3lox and their role with p and they said that

these enzymes were involved in p. Ok, so this is over

my head but I am trying to figure out if these enzymes

are related - meaning if the 12rlox and e3lox cause

inflamation for p and the 5lox causes inflamation in

asthma, maybe there is something that causes these

enzymes to be inflamed and many other people with p

and or pa may also have difficulty breathing. I know

that I am not making this very clear, I have an idea

that difficulty breathing and inflamation of the skin

may have some correlation. I am looking for feedback.

Can other people with difficulty breathing, wheather

from reflux/hiata hernia or any other reason and have

p/pa.

Thanks for any response from you all out there.

I would also like to take a moment and mention that

the excellent poem by Mickey made me think that we

should print it out on pretty paper and put it in a

frame and send it to reumy doctor offices to be hung

up so that everyone can read it! Excellent poem

Dear , I'm fairly new to the group, but I too had problems after my

5th injection of Enbrel. I was short of breath, and started swelling and

had severe edema in my feet and legs. I've just recently been diagnosed

with congestive heart failure and pulmonary edema. They also told me from

the chest x-ray my heart has enlarged. The strange thing is I had a chest

X-ray before I went on Enbrel, to rule out TB, and it was perfectly fine.

So in 2 months, I managed to developed all these symptoms and now am left

dealing with heart failure. Talk about scary. The sad thing is I think

the Enbrel was helping the PA, but I have no doubt if I had kept up the

injections I would have died or ended up in the ER. I guess there is still

a lot they don't know about these drugs and it could be a strange

coinciendence that it happened to me at the same time, but I sort of doubt

it. You are about the 10th person I've run across who stopped Enbrel due to

shortness of breath. Have you been checked out with a Echo Cardiogram?

That is really the only way to rule out congestive heart failure. I'm only

48 and up until now always had a strong heart. I'm seeing a cardiologist

now and he has me on large doses of water pills and it seems to be helping.

Good luck and I hope no one else has as bad of a problem as I did.

Sincerely, Fran in Florida----Original Message-----
