Subject: [ ] pleural effusion/lung

One correction:

Someone asked if a thoracentesis is when they stick a needle in your lung

to draw out fluid. The needle doesn't go into the lung. It goes into the

pleural cavity which surrounds the lung. I have had many thoracentesis

procedures for pleural effusions when I had ovarian cancer 15 years ago. They

were not painful, but certainly not something I'd ever want to do again.

Funny, everyone says that a thoracentesis is not painful..  Well, mine sure

was.  The dr. put in the needle and left the room, never to be seen again, and

left two nurses there.  The more fluid they took out the more painful it was, i

finally made them stop before the procedure was done, I could not stand the

pain.  I don't know why it hurt, but they gave me pain meds immediately. and so

far as I know, I am the only one that had pain with this procedure, that is

weird!

No Bobby

I had pain also. I did not have pain meds because they rushed me right in to

have it done. Just a little local where they stuck the HUGE needle in me. At

least it looked HUGE to me!!! And my husband was right there with me holding

my hand. I had too sit up and bend over as they stuck it in my back, I would

almost say it was worst then the BMA.---well maybe not. But it was very

painful!!!!!

But the weird thing is, it wasn't the needle that hurt, it was the fluid leaving

the body that hurt!!

I guess a diuretic wouldn't do the trick? Excuse me if that is a dumb

question!
