Guest guest
I'm not sure what you can do legally, but I just went through the same thing. I've had to have our ped's office copy and fax Tristen's records way too many times to many different dr's. I finally ask for my own copy, so I wouldnt' have to ask them to make copies any longer. All the other times it was just done, but when I wanted copies for myself, I had to pay $.5 per page. It only cost about $37 for me, but I wasn't happy I had to pay at all! With the amount of money I've given them over the years, I was shocked they made me pay. HOpe you can get it figured out! le ________________________________ From: ksteltz77 <kmay77@...> Sent: Saturday, November 29, 2008 4:27:57 PM Subject: Help with getting copies of my child's records... Does anyone know any legal stuff that will help me obtain my child's records from the pediatrician? My son has been at CHOP over and over in the past 4weeks and we continue to see about 6 different specialists down there this month. My ped has transferred records to CHOP (all appropriate departments) but I want a copy for our records b/c I want to be informed when going to these multiple appointments. I have been told by my ped that it will cost us ONE HUNDRED dollars (yes, $100) to obtain a copy of the entire file. If we want just notes and no labs, it will cost us $50. This is after they went through his chart and counted up how many pages they would have to copy. We tried to explain to them that this would cause a financial hardship and was there anything they could work out with us. the answer was " no. " I am going to look into JCHO's regs but was wondering if anyone could spare me some time in reseraching if they've already been this route. I really don't have the energy w/ everything that's been going and with my son AND being 8months pregnant. Why does everything have to be a fight, sometimes? Thanks in advance for any ideas/input. Guest guest
Mostly a lurker here but when I request my DD's records the hopsital has a form that I fill out. It asks what kinds of records(x-ray's, tests, clinic notes, in-patient, etc) and from what date to what date. It also asks for the reason you would like to have the records and it gives you several options. If I check 'personal' I have to pay but if I check 'continuity of care' the records are free??!! Not sure why?? Maybe let them know it isn't for personal use, even though it is, but for continuity of care. Guest guest
NO this is standard around the country. The only way to get around this is to have them send to to a FRIENDLY office that will copy them for free. They do not charge other doctors only parents. FUN HUH??? Guest guest
I'm afraid the legality is on their side. Legally they can charge for their time and effort to copy the records. We went through this early on. Now as the results come in and are brought into the room to be discussed I ask for my copy right then and there. I realize that doesn't help you with what is going on now but it could help to mention to newly diagnosed families. One of two things will be accomplished, either you'll have just the cost each time of copying that days results or since it is only a page or two at a time the docs office won't charge at all. Our ped or immunologist doesn't charge for copies. Most are faxed to me though straight out of the computer system so no manpower is used. There are free fax services with email delivery you could use for this. www.efax.com is what we use.
