Her dr. put her on 20 mg X2 day of prednisone for 3 days and then 20 mg once aday for 2 days and Omnicef. She was doing great for 5 days on steroids and first 3 days off of them...now she is starting to get wet cough again and nose flaring when she's running around. Guest guest
Here's the thing. Steroids are going to bring down swelling and inflammation anywhere. Sinuses, joints, lungs, any tissue. So they can help shrink swollen sinus tissue so that she can breath better plus they could help open up her chest so that it doesn't get infected. It could also affect her eating, blood sugar, white count and set her up for opportunistic infections so it's a trade off of sorts. Guest guest
I sure do wish they would come up with a " wonder drug " that had all the wonderful effects of steroids without the bad side effects! Reagon is only 7 but already knows she is going to feel like a whole different kid when she is on steroids. Her feet and knees don't hurt, her head opens up and her cough goes away...she feels great..then we get to the end of the dose and reality hits as all her inflammation settles back in. Uggh! Do getting IV steroid bursts have as bad of side effects?? Becki > > > Here's the thing. Steroids are going to bring down swelling and inflammation anywhere. Sinuses, joints, lungs, any tissue. Guest guest
Hi, Just thought I'd chime in here regarding stubborn sinus infections. My son has been off and on (mostly on) antibiotics for years for chronic sinus infections. Finally about four months ago, it was suggested that we try Septra (reg. strength) twice a day. We thought we tried everything , but we neglected to try his med.. It's really worked well, he's down to a maintenance dose of one tablet at bedtime with no sign of infection. This is the first time that he's been free of fevers and night sweats for years. Our ped. thought perhaps he has MRSA or some other form of staph in his sinuses and we haven't hit it with the right antibiotic yet. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that she's right ! So far so good... Take care, @...: momtoboywholoveshisgoats@...: Fri, 28 Nov 2008 14:08:38 -0800Subject: Re: Oral steroids for sinus infection? Guest guest
, That's interesting that you say that...Reagon's immunologist wanted to put her on Septra, but her pulmonologist thought Omnicef would be better for a sinus infection. I thought it was working great since she kept saying her headache was gone, but now that the steroids have worn off she is saying her head is hurting in the mornings again. She is not complaining near as bad as she was before the Omnicef, but I'll be curious to see what happens when she comes off it. They tried Zyvox for 7 days first and she did great until about day 10 or 12 and then the sinus infection came back with a vengence. I had already gotten the Septra prescription filled (but had not started her on it)when her pulmo said she wanted her to do Omnicef instead..I guess if she relapses after the Omnicef we can try the Septra! Thanks for the info! Guest guest
Becki, I may have missed this, but did they culture it? Mark started a sinus infection last September that didn't respond to any antibiotics that they were giving him. Finally in March I insisted on a culture. Turned out he had a very strange bacteria (doctors were a little shocked, nurses had never even heard of it) in there that was resistant to the antibiotics he had been taking. They gave him a different one, and it cleared it up. If it doesn't clear up, I would ask about ENT referral, who can get up there and get a really good culture. Good luck! mom to Mark 7 CVID From: > Becki Rion <rionfam@>Subject: Oral steroids for sinus > infection?@: Friday, November 28, 2008, 4:52 PMAnyone > ever been prescribed oral steroids for their kiddos sinus infection? > I took Reagon to pulmo week before last and her PFT's were down due > to her head being all stopped up and cruddy. Guest guest
, We go in for PFT's on Tuesday...I am going to ask them about doing a culture. They cultured her when all this started about 6 weeks ago but I think all they checked for was staph. That came back negative, but they did a short round of Zosyn anyway, which seemed to knock it down somewhat for about a week, then it came back worse than before. She is due to have a CT on her sinuses and I was hoping to get that done before we went to the ENT (we do have a great one). She had sinus surgery about 2 years ago and the ENT said she'd probably need another one in the future..I'm wondering if we are at that point again. This is our first time to battle a sinus infection though..before everything went to her ears. I just hate the feeling of " wasting time " over a long weekend when I am pretty sure the antibiotic they have her on isn't doing the trick! Guest guest
The " BEST " treatment for sinus infections is to RINSE the sinuses out several times a day . We use a Grochen machine with a special tip and a saline powder with Xylatol it is amazing what it does to keep them clear and healthy so the # of infections is greatly reduced. There is also a tip for the water pik and a bottle called Nielmed that work just as well. If you are not doing sinus rinses then you are only doing half of what can be done to prevent the infections. It is hard at first to get the kids to do them but after awhile they realize that it does make them feel better and the number of infections go down radically. Also since my son gets bloody noses from the nasal sprays ( my Idoc says it is from the preservatives we use the .25mcg of the inhaled pulmicort in his rinses and it works fanatastic to reduce the inflammation and prevent the infections. Antibiotics have a very hard time getting into the sinuses and clearing the infections. Guest guest
I wish I could get Reagon to do the sinus rinses! She has yet to learn how to swim because she can't stand to get water in her nose. I have often wondered if it is because she doesn't like the feeling or if it hurts her sinuses to get water in them. I ordered something made by Pari that is a sinustar. It's kind like a nebulizer but for the sinuses. It does kind of a saline " mist " instead of a stream of water. I am hoping Reagon will tolerate it. I haven't received it yet so we will see.
