Guest guest
Nick had one done when he was 8 months old. It was very traumatic for us, thankfully he doesn't remember it. We were not in the room but it took forever. All I can remember is wanting to break down the door of the room he was in and rush him out of the hospital. I am not sure if they gave him versed or not but he was crying. I hope if this is the road you are headed down that it goes smoothly, my prayers are with you. Amy, mom to Nick (will be 6 in two days!! CVID) Anyone's child had a spinal tap? has anyone's child had a spinal tap? Can you tell me about it? How traumatic was it for the child? Do they sedate them? What do they usually use? How painful was it? Thanks. It looks like we're headed that direction and I wanted to know what to expect. Guest guest
Amy, He's only 3 and there's no way he's going to stay still. Do they stay in the hospital or is he going to have to remain sedated the whole time? My mother told me when she had one as an adult, they made her lay flat for a long period of time. This will JUST NOT happen with my 3 year old. He's " too well " (meaning he's not laying around lethargic) and too hyperactive. Guest guest
Our son has had so 5-7 spinal taps. He is only 3 1/2 so he was sedated for each one. They used two different drugs to sedate, one was called fetanol(sp?) and I can't remember the other, but they are used as a combination, maybe a nurse on here would know. However most of his spinal taps were preceded by a MRI that was about 30-45 minutes so the sedation drugs might have been a little stronger than what is normally used. One time they used propofol to sedate him and he had an allergic reaction to it, this was the only time it was done without an MRI and the sedation drug was different, needless to say the other drugs were better for him, he had no reaction, woke up pretty quickly although he was slightly groggy, he would eat and drink enough that everyone was happy and then usually fall asleep again on the way home. Since our child was asleep throughout all of the spinal taps it was not traumatic for him at all. But depending on age, they might do it differently for everyone. Guest guest
Hi My child had one but she was soooo out of it to begin with she did not move during the procedure. I was ready for her to scream in pain but it never happened. To tell you the truth that was when I thought things were serious. I knew I was close to losing her when she did not respond to the spinal tap. It freaked me out! thank goodness things worked out and she bounced back. I can tell you that she had pain as a side effect after the procedure. She was in the hospital and she was fine one minute and the next she was screaming in pain. They told me it was from the spinal tap. I have no idea what was happening to her to make her feel that way. She could never explain what she was feeling during the pain. I could barely get her to talk when the pain occured. She just screamed. It was horrible. They medicated her to make her feel better. I don't remember what they gave her. She was five when this happened. I don't want to scare you--just prepare you. Good luck! Theresa From: ksteltz77 <kmay77@...> Subject: Anyone's child had a spinal tap? Guest guest
Conner was 13 at the time of his spinal tap, he was put to sleep for his central line placement and they did the lumbar puncture at the same time. He didn't complain of any discomfort afterward and although he took it easy the rest of that day, he didn't have any restrictions. Guest guest
I have had a couple . It is not particularly painful. But you have to curl up in a ball and be very still. They also numb the area BARBIE ________________________________ From: ksteltz77 <kmay77@...> Sent: Friday, December 19, 2008 5:51:54 PM Subject: Anyone's child had a spinal tap? has anyone's child had a spinal tap? Guest guest
Hi, My son's had four lumbar punctures. He was sedated for three of them, and fully awake for one. It was awful, it was a life and death moment, as he had MRSA meningitis, and became allergic to Vancomycin, he then developed s Syndrome. It took four adults, using all of our strength to hold him down (35 lb. 5 year old). It's amazing the strength a sick little boy has when his adrenalin is pumping. I would recommend sedation if possible, it's very tramatic for children to be held down for a procedure. If you can avoid it, you should. They go through enough as it is. All the best and take good care, @...: kmay77@...: Fri, 19 Dec 2008 23:51:54 +0000Subject: Anyone's child had a spinal tap? has anyone's child had a spinal tap? Can you tell me about it? Guest guest
My son had one done recently. He was sedated with propofol (?). It was a really great experience. It took about 15 minutes; he kept sleeping for another 30-45 minutes which is really good. The longer they lay flat after the procedure the less likely they'll get a headache. It really was a non-event and never complained of any soreness... The biggest difference is going to a place that does really well with kids and has a ton of experience. > > has anyone's child had a spinal tap? Can you tell me about it?
