Jim,

That's interesting, Jim.I was 24 in 1973 when I developed it, and was diagnosed right away. Have you gotten better as you have aged? I'm afraid there isn't anything to that theory???? I wonder if improvement depends on how long you have the disease? My husband says he remembers reading somewhere that the worst of it lasts 35 or 40 years, then slows down and improves. Does anyone know anything about that?Jim Brown <jim747@...> wrote:

Hi Billie,

Mine was worst through the 90’s (late

40’s). It has only gotten better since I was desensitized in October,

2003.

I’m not sure if age makes any

difference.

I'm 50 and show no signs of a let-up of polyp growth. Interestingly, I have polyps and allergy to aspirin and NSAIDS, but no asthma. If I take aspirin or NSAIDS, I get shortness of breath, but otherwise, no asthma. I took aspirin with no problem until I was about 19, then one day, took one and was short of breath. Didn't make the aspirin association until the next time I took an aspirin, and had the same reaction. Haven't had an aspirin since. I've been fighting sinusitis and nasal polyps since I was 20. Had 4 major sinus surgeries, plus zillions of office polypectomies, over the years. Neither age nor hormones seem to be a factor for me. But then, I don't seem to have regular symptoms, either. No allergic reactions that I can pinpoint-except I'm worse on windy days; very small reaction to skin tests, though I had a delayed reaction to cockroaches (welts stayed on my arms for 7 weeks!); no known food allergies....nothing jumps out at me as to what I am reacting to. Have also had polyps throughout my body, and doctors insist they are not related. Does this sound familiar to anyone else?

Don't know if I am considered to have Samter's or not. All I know is I have polyps, am allergic to aspirin and NSAIDS, and if I take aspirin or NSAIDS, I get asthma-like symptoms. I have the triad only when aspirin/NSAIDS are introduced. I get bronchitis at the drop of a hat, too. I am looking for something that will help the polyp situation, as that is the worst part, for me. I'm tired of having surgery!!

Anyway, I'm getting some taste and smell back.....finally!! I'm going to indulge in some cheesecake when I can really taste it and can enjoy every bite!!! Afterwards, I'll diet and continue to search and hope to find some relief from polyp regrowth.

My answer is no, you do not have Samters.

I haven't really heard of people who have TWO out of the three

symptoms, however. My father had nasal polyps but no asthma or

aspirin reaction, my mother and her mother are allergic to aspirin but

no polyps or asthma (except they can't breathe when they take aspirin).

Hmm, I didn't know this and find it interesting. I mean, I know

that you can start out without all of the symptoms, you don't get

them all at once, but I didn't know that you could go on forever

without all three symptoms and still be considered to have Samters.

Lori,

I think that's why Dr. son calls it Aspirin Exacerbated Respiratory

Disease. Sometimes, the

symptoms of " allergic reaction " to aspirin are respiratory things other than

asthma, (although

asthma is the most common). I guess, as Ken pointed out,my tight chest was an

asthmatic reaction

to aspirin. However, until after my first surgety, I didn't have any other

asthma symptoms. A

month after sinus surgery, I was carrying around a rescue inhaler for the first

time. Weird.

I think it has to do with another component of the blood work. I

don't know which part because mine was elevated plus the positive RA

factor made my Dr. tell me I have an agressive form. It might be the

CRP...

My dr. is treating me with 15mg of Metholtrexate once per week, one

gram of folic acid per day, and since my vitamin D was almost

nothing, I take 50,000 whatevers of that 2X per week.

I have been tested for food allergies and am allergic to wheat, rye,

millet, sunflower, shrimp, casein, whey, egg yoke and white, yeast

and pinto and kidney beans. When I eat this stuff I gain amazing

amounts of weight fast and have a horrible time with the pain. If I

don't eat this stuff, I can maintain a normal weight and things go

fine. HARD FOR ME TO DO!!! I crave the foods I'm allergic to. The

only thing I can safely eat are meat, fruit and veggies. I should do

a support team for THAT!lol.

I appreciate reading your information about food allergies. It sounds

like your level of RA is the same as mine( I too take MTX and folic

acid also enbrel.. as well as prednisone, actonel and levoxyl). I've

never been tested for food allergies...... but now I think I will ask

for that. :) This group is GREAT for keeping us all informed. So

much going through our bodies. Has anyone tried a " whole body

cleanse " ? I've been reading about the benefits. I hesitate to ask my

rhuemy because I am relatively certain she will say " don't do it " . Any

opinions??

So THANKS again!

Carol:

The lab that tested me for allergies was Immuno Laboratories in Ft.

Lauderdale, FL they have a website so you can google them and check them out. I

carry a wallet card, and they have a guarantee that if you stay off the foods

for 3 months and you don't feel better you get your money back.

I saw someone about food allergies, turned out i was allergic to

yeast, potatoes, tomatoes (whole nightshade family), any kind of

pepper, plums, peaches, lentils, rice, legumes (baked beans, kidney

beans, peanuts etc), brazil nuts, and i was told to avoid pork and red

meat as these things make inflammation worse!! It did help the pain,

but any dr i spoke to said to eat normally, because if you eat any

kind of restrictive diet, it can make you unhealthy in other ways.

Also, it makes it so much harder to go out and eat, and i got really

stressed at not being able to eat what i wanted!! unless it's helping

lots, i wouldnt recommend any diet thats too restrictive.

Do vegetarians have a lower instance or RA? (I am one with RA)

Even as a child, I did not eat red meat.

What about Asian countries, that eat less meat and fat?

I know that Asian countries have a lower instance of cancer, but have not

heard anything about RA.

Any scientific studies we can point to? This seems to be a ventiure that

either has not been explored or publicized much....(Diet and RA)!

I concur. To me it's logical that vegetables and a non-animal product

diet would be less abusive on our bodies, arteries would not have fat

running through them to clog up. We are what we eat. From time to

time our pipes in our houses have to be flushed out due to roots etc.

our bodies are no different except we don't / can't flush them out

adequately. Right??? So we get sick and diseases.........
