Guest guest
Becki, Glad I could help. I have to let you know that pulmonologists and endocrinologists do not see eye to eye on the suppression issue. I know that asthma meds that exceed 400mcg in children can cause adrenal gland to be suppressed. I think if you condsider the asthma meds and the oral meds for a long peroid of time suppression can be an issue. I have never weaned a child but I would assume you may see signs of the adrenal issues as you wean. So what you need to ask is, are these signs just from weaning or is there a serious need to give the kid a stress dose because the body is not responding quick enough. We have a letter and a protocol to follow when there maybe a need to stress dose. Fevers over 101, loose stool, and vomiting. Daily dose is 5mg in am and 2.5mg in pm. Stress dose is 20mg right off the bat followed by 5mg every six hours until things are under control for about 24 hours. If there is a fever we stop the every six hours after the fever is gone for 24hours. My question would be what rules should you follow? If your daughter has the fever and dizziness what should you do? Since I have never weaned my question would be how long can you let the fever/dizziness continue before you may have to do something? Maybe she will only feel yucky for an hour until her body adjusts to the change. I don't know that answer. I have personally learned that with my 7 year old daughter when she says her tummy hurts and she feels sick I should stress dose her right away. I have seen her go to school come home and say I feel chilly. She proceeds to get grey, then vomits, starts to run a fever, and then becomes unresponsive within an hour or two. The last time that happened they admitted her with pnuemonia and I never saw it coming and neither did the teacher. I do not stress dose my son as quickly. He fairs better than her in that department. I guess what I am trying to say is that there are probably going to be bumps in the road while weaning but you might feel more at ease if you had some guidelines to follow. I wish you the best and I hope you don't have a nervous breakdown. You'll make it! Take care Theresa Becki Rion <rionfam@...> wrote: Theresa, Well, Reagon woke up this morning and said she was so dizzy she couldn't walk down the stairs after she got up..then within 30 minutes of being up and around spiked a fever. Thank goodness today is a day to get steroids for her, so I immediately gave them to her. She laid down and rested for awhile and now is up coloring and seems to feel better. If I make it to Friday for IVIG and a big dose of steroids without having a nervous breakdown it will be a miracle. I am hoping that once the steroids kick in she will be much better. If not, I'm not sure what I'll do because her pulmonologist office is closed on Wed. I really want to talk to her immunologist on Fri. about this weaning process, so far her pulmonologist has been calling all the shots and I'd like to get a second opinion. Thanks agian for the info. and I am definetely going to have her levels checked on Friday! Becki --------------------------------- Never miss a thing. Make your homepage. Guest guest
Theresa, I hope your daughter is okay! I am always amazed at how fast things can come on with these kiddos, and it sounds like your daughter's come on reaaaaally fast! There is definetely no rest for the weary with these guys! Thanks for the pat on the back. I learned a long time ago that none of these two kids seem to be the same and unless your dr. is willing to sit down and research, things that work for one kid may not work for yours. That is one issue I am having with our pulmonologist. She is absolutely wonderful, but is very, very hesitant to try things " outside of the box " . It took a month of me begging and finally the immunologist stepping in before she was willing to try the theophylline. I kept giving her research papers done on it, but she just didn't have the time to sit down and read them. I think she felt really bad once she saw the response we got. Keep me posted on your daughter and I'll let you know how things go at the immunologist tomorrow! I've never been so excited about IVIG in my life. Ha! Ha!
