Guest guest
I also remember reading that nightshades can cause an inflammatory reaction in some folks with RA. Here is a little blurb from an article on the subject: Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) Unlike OA, RA is an " auto-immune " disease, affecting approximately 2 million Americans. Unlike OA it is frequently found in people under forty, and affects women two to one. The initial causes are personal and individual however the most common triggers include the following: genetics, food allergies, and environmental factors. RA DIETARY & LIFESTYLE CONSIDERATIONS First eliminate the most common allergic foods-wheat-corn-dairy and nightshades. The nightshades (Solanaceae) family contain alkaloids which may inhibit the formation of collagen. Nightshades include potatoes, tomatoes, eggplant and peppers (all colors and types), and paprika. Why and how do the nightshades aggravate those ailments? The alkaloid known as solanine also interferes with muscle enzymes causing pain. The alkaloids may also damage the permeability of the intestine resulting in " leaky gut " allowing toxins to enter the bloodstream eventually resulting in some autoimmune diseases such as arthritis. There have been studies showing that the elimination of the nightshades have resulted in relief of almost 80% of the pain and discomfort of arthritis. Please realize that not all arthritis sufferers will benefit, and this correlation may be due to other factors, however there is no harm in trying this elimination diet for a period of at least 8-12 weeks. Strict compliance is required for even minute amounts may aggravate or re-aggravate the condition. If no results are obtained within 24 weeks, the nightshades should not be considered the problem. Check all food labels, as the nightshades may be hidden or non-hidden ingredients. Tomatoes may be found in sauces, dressings, baked beans etc. Potatoes may be found in some dry soup, baked goods, frozen foods, and some yogurts. Peppers may be found in seasonings, some cheeses, pickles, and salad dressings. Also check the herbal teas. Increase the consumption of EFA through foods, They include cold water fatty fish such as salmon, mackerel, halibut, and tuna. Flax oil, avocados, and walnuts also provide these EFA's. ) ----- Original Message ----- From: " K a r e n P " <karlynn17@...> <Rheumatoid Arthritis > Sent: Thursday, April 01, 2004 12:40 PM Subject: Re: question about MIL > that list looks promising - haven't read thru it all, but thank you so much! > > > ----Original Message Follows---- > From: <blair.family@...> > Reply-Rheumatoid Arthritis > <Rheumatoid Arthritis > > Subject: Re: question about MIL > Date: Thu, 1 Apr 2004 10:40:02 -0500 > > Hi , > > Try this link: > > http://www.google.com/search?q=cache:Gu4v8YfjSSMJ:www.expoeast.com/attendee/educ\ ation/proceedings/Inflammation-Syndrome-challem.pdf+anti+inflammatory+foods & hl=e\ n & ie=UTF-8 > > _________________________________________________________________ > Get tax tips, tools and access to IRS forms - all in one place at MSN Money! > http://moneycentral.msn.com/tax/home.asp > > > > > >
