Guest guest
Dear , My parents used the Farmer's Almanac to guide their planting times. My mother had her own ideas about what made things grow. She told me children were blessed by God and if they planted the seeds, they would grow, so that was my job, bending over and planting the seeds. She came behind me with the hoe to cover them up. I was so close to the ground, I didn't have to bend very far. I never minded being with my mother and working all summer to harvest the vegetables, because I knew how hard she worked and how good we would be eating all year from the fruits of her labor. When the tomatoes grew large and red in her beautiful garden, I used to fill my pocket with salt and walk between the rows and pull the ripest, juiciest tomatoes and sprinkle them with salt. Thank you for bringing back a very happy, savory memory, expecially with the price of tomatoes today. Guest guest
Speaking of bringing up fond memories, the last time, and maybe the only time, I got it on the butt with the razor strop, was due to gardening. The rows and rows of pepper plants had come up and had blossoms on them and my mom and dad were saying how good they would be. Well, I knew if they grew big enough to be eaten, I would have to eat them too. Yuck! I was a terrible eater as a child. So I pulled them all up, and dug a hole and buried them! Many years later my dad was saying he never hit us with the razor strop, and when I reminded him of what I had done, and what he did because of it, he told me I was lucky to be alive!!!! Have laughed about that one for a long time.
