Guest guest
I know some of you have been tested and have the BraCa gene and may know someone who does have it. I thought you might be interested in this article. Computer Modeling Defines Effects of Prophylactic Strategies for BRCA1/2 Mutation rs " Researchers from Stanford University have used computer modeling to define the benefits of different prophylactic strategies to reduce the risk of dying of breast cancer among individuals with a BRCA1/2 mutation. The details of this study appeared in the January 20, 2010 issue of the Journal of Clinical Oncology. Inherited mutations in two genes—BRCA1 and BRCA2—have been found to greatly increase the lifetime risk of developing breast and ovarian cancer. Mutations in these genes can be passed down through either the mother’s or the father’s side of the family. Women with a BRCA1 mutation have a 47-66% lifetime risk of developing breast cancer, and women with a BRCA2 mutation have a 40-57% lifetime risk of developing the disease. These statistics are compared with a 13% lifetime risk of breast cancer in the general population. Early onset screening with mammography and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), prophylactic oophorectomy, and mastectomy are three strategies that are used to reduce the risk of dying of breast cancer in BRCA1/2 mutation carriers, but little is known about the absolute benefit of each these approaches.
