Birth defects

I had not thought of this for some time, but I know a man with lobster claws for

hands. He has 3 fingers on each hand. He told me his father was in Hiroshima

when the A-bom was dropped. He was a prisoner of war who was forced to do slave

labor. He was in the midst of one of the blasts. He returned home, got married

and had a family. I don't know where in line this man stood with siblings, but

I asked if his father had worked with Benzene. He then told me the story about

his father. I asked if he was still livin, but he said his father died of

leukemia, which they believe was a direct result of the blast. His son, whom I

met appears to be very normal in every other aspect and he can do any

thing with those hands that most of us do. This is an extreme, but I have read

about other civilians who survived the last, but developed leukemia. I don't

know of any babies being born with any birth defects after their mothers were

found to have CML. They either planned it and stopped taking Gleevec or gave it

up after they found they were pregnant.

Each case is differents, I would strongly advise anyone who is thinking of

having a family to see a CML specialist and a very good OB/GYN. I'm sure men

could have a DNA test to see if they are a carrier of anything. WE don't know

what recessive genes we may be carrying.

My DIL's father was in an institution from the time she was a very small child

to his death. He supposedly had scitzophrania and was unstable. This has

nothing to do with the subect, but is a personal story about genetics. Recently

her mother died. They were not divorced, just separated because of his being

detained. She then found out her father was in the morgue with no next of kin

to claim his ashes. She immediately went to pick up his ashes and had he and

her mother put next to each other. It was some closure for her to have them

back together again. Life happens.

FYI,

It is much easier for a man to because a father because he only has to stop

taking Gleevec for a few weeks
