Guest guest
Hi all, My son is getting his first IVIG infusion next week. He is a non-typical case, his PID is not antibody-deficient but rather autoimmune in nature, which means he makes too many antibodies-his body attacks itself. He has IgG subclass deficiency 2. I am wondering if people have used prednisone on infusion day to help with side-effects. My son is highly (negatively) reactive to many therapies and I am looking for ways to decrease any negative response he may have. I feel like I have one shot at this- I want it to be a good experience for him, as he's very resistant to IV's due to negative experiences in the past, and is 13 years old. Thanks for any feedback! Guest guest
Our experience is not to premedicate with prednisone until the time of the infusion. When Lucas has been on prednisone he has had a terrible time getting IVs started. It makes them more friable and blow really bad. BARBIE From: CYNDITK <cyndi@...> Subject: 1st infusion-prednisone? Guest guest
We had to premedicate with steroid for the first few infusions and it worked fairly well. Then we rotated tylenol and motrin for 24-48 hours. When we changed product to Gamunex and decreased the rate to < 35 cc/hour, we tapered down all meds and were eventually able to go without any premeds---sometimes just the motrin/tylenol. However, with an autoimmune condition and relevant dose (which is usually much higher than that for a PID), I'm not sure of the protocol. I would, at minimum, encourage you to work with the nurses to prevent them from cranking up the rate. And, drink plenty of appropriate fluids. mom to Dani, CVID 1st infusion-prednisone?
