Guest guest
Hi Jamy, Puffy eyes are a side effect of Gleevec. What we don't know here are the side effects of Veenat. Veenat is a Generic Gleevec and it could be slightly different than Gleevec. Pale skin is also a side effect of Gleevec. The standard dose of Gleevec is 400 mg. Is there a reason that he is on 300 mg? Ask his doctor if he access to some of the other CML drugs like Sprycel or Tasigna. They work well for CML and may not have the same side effects as Veenat. Dear friends, my father diagonalized CML and under Veenat(Gleevec) 300mg for the past 6 months. His blood counts looks normal after taking the drug. Now the main issue is (besides pale skin) swelling around the eyes due to fluid and its quite disturbance since eyes shrinks. But Doctor says its due to the side effects of Gleevec and some time prescribed one Tablet but not cured. Is it like that? Is there any thing we need to do to over come this? Please suggest. Guest guest
Hi Jamy: That is good that your father has normal counts. The fluid in the eyes is a normal side effect of Gleevec. I have had CML for 11 years, and that is the one side effect that I deal with daily. When the eyes swell, it does look bad. I use a cold compress on my eyes when I get up in the morning, and it helps the swelling very well. I still go through the runny eyes all day long. Fluid just keeps coming out once in awhile, and it looks like I am crying. I would not worry about that or any other side effects like foot cramps which I get pretty bad sometimes.    If he gets anything really unusual, then contact his doctor. I hope he continues to do well with his blood counts. Guest guest
Hi Zavie, The reason why doctor reduced the doze from 400mg to 300mg is bcoz of low WBC. Some times back WBC count decreased when he was on 400 and and doctor changed it to 300mg 3 months back and his WBC count set to normal after that.. Dr said he cant reduce below 300 mg since it wont effect. I will ask the dr about sprycel and tasigna. Thanks a lot for ur reply. Thx, Jamy ________________________________ From: Zavie <zmiller@...> Sent: Sat, April 24, 2010 8:02:11 PM Subject: RE: [ ] Fluid around the eyes. Hi Jamy, Puffy eyes are a side effect of Gleevec. Guest guest
Hi Jamy, Most CML specialists will not reduce the Gleevec. Instead they will halt the medication until the WBC comes back into normal range and then restart the Gleevec at 400 mg. When a patient receives a sub optimal dose of Gleevec there is a danger that the patient will become resistant to the drug. There is a situation where this is not true. It occurs when a lower dose of Gleevec acts like a full dose of Gleevec. This can only be determined by running a special test called a serum level test.
