Guest guest
Hi Debbie, Hugs to you and welcome to the group. Repo can be so hard with a tort baby. You definitely need to work on the tort. Look in the files section. We have a folder with a great document for ideas on stretching, strengthening, making tummy time fun, etc. Also we have a ton of repo advice which I guess you have found. Do the best you can. It sounds like her neck may be very tight. How often are you stretching her? I would do it at least 5 times a day. For sleep try pinning a positioner to her sleeper - there are pics in the repo section. Pin it under the shoulder of the flat side. It makes it very difficult for her to lay on that side. She doesn't hate you, she is uncomfortable. You are doing what is best for her well being. Think of it as practice for the teen years Try carrying her so the bulgy side is in the crook of your arm. Also feed her so the bulgy side is in the crook of your arm. There is a football carry that also works well. These all support the neck, do some gentle stretching (but not past mid-line) and put pressure on the bulgy side instead of the flat. There are pics in document I mentioned above. She is still very young. Ideal age for repo, PT and band therapy. How band friendly is your ped? In the repo section there is also an evaluation for is my baby a good repo candidate. With the tort your daughter may not be one who will benefit from repo. The AAP recommends repo until 5 months but does say some cases warrant starting band therapy between 3-5 months. I would call your local early intervention and get an evaluation for her. Tort babies usually qualify for at home, free PT. Have a look around the files and links sections - oh and don't forget the photos - such cute babies. You will probably go into information overload, but you will feel very comfortable at the specialist. So where are you located? mom to naDOC GradSouth Carolinawww.thefilyaws.com datb71 <aguinesslover@...> wrote: Hi all. I am new to this group and I am so happy to have found you. Guest guest
Hello and welcome to the group. At your baby's age, you still have time to try the repositioning and she could see great correction. However, it sounds as if she has torticollis also which can make repositioning very difficult if not impossible. My youngest Daughter has tort and plagio and I attempted to reposition her and I was somewhat successful but ended up banding her at 7 Months because the tort made repositioning very hard. She saw some correction with the repo and has seen great correction with the band so far (6 weeks). Good luck and let us know what happens. Guest guest
Thank you . I live in Robbinsville NJ. My pediatrician was not concerned, however I am a speech pathologist and have worked in Early Intervention for years, so I was not waiting. I feel so stupid, because I new about the flat head on the back, but did not know about the side flattening. I scheduled an appt. for a craniofacial specialist I think I may call and schedule another appt. with another doctor in the pediatrician group just to see what they think. She goes to the specialist on May 4th, she also has her 4 month checkup in the beginning of May. I am having a Pt who worked with me in EI come over and show me stretches. I tried what I found on the web and she really cried. Regarding how tight her side is, laying down she goes to the left, however when I have her seated, she has pretty good range of movement to the right side. I'm doing lots of tummy time. Sleeping is the main issue, I'm going to try what you suggested about pinning her at night. I can't thank you enough. I'm just so worried and sad about this all. Guest guest
Hi, and welcome to the group. My name is Berri and I am mommy to Meggi who has mild plagio on her right side. I found this group when my Meggi was seven weeks old and she is now 12 weeks old. I have benefited much from repo and mostly from the advice that these wonderful moms give me in this group! You came to the right place. My dd always looked to the right when I layed her down. I didn't think anything of because I was sleeping her on her back like I was supposed to and she wasn't laying flat on the back of her head. I had never heard of plagio either. I noticed the forehead bossing on the right side and her cheek was fuller and her eye was bigger also on the right side. When I went to the neuro he said that she didn't have tort because she had full range of motion in her neck. When I sat her up or held her facing my chest she could face to the left (liked looking to the right) At night I had an especially hard time repoing her because she always seemed to find a way to that flat spot. >:} Very stressful! She was also fussy and cried a lot at first because she was uncomfortable. I finally found that if I attached sticky velcro to a washcloth and diaper pinned it towards the middle of the back of her sleeper gathering the material so that it pulled tight she couldn't wiggle. I prop her on her left side completely with a triangle shaped wedge that is velcroed to a mat and then is another wedge in the front to keep her from rolling onto her tummy that is velcroed to the mat in the front. The velcro on the sleeper attaches to velcro on the wedge against her back. You ahve to put extra velcro on the wedge that goes against her back. Meggi is off of her flat spot 95% of the time at night, which is great! By propping your dd on her right side it might not hurt her neck as much since it is not requiring her to turn her head all the way and face to the right. It doesn't involve as much neck stretching because really she is just looking straight ahead since she is on her side instead of her back and trying to get her to look that way. I do the neck stretches with Meggi even though she doesn't have tort. Hers was caused by intrauterine constraint from being breech. The doc said she was probably looking to the right and just got used to it! I hope this helps and was confusing. I will send pics by reg email and call them Megg's repo pics so that you can see a visual of the repo at night! Feel free to ask me anything! Guest guest
Don't be sad just be motivated They hate the stretches - keep doing them. na hated them. We stretched her from 3 months to 13 months. Tort is a long drawn out affair. It gets better, you have a set back, it gets worse again. Usually it needs to be monitored closely until about 18 months of age or they are walking well. It can lead to other developmental motor skill delays. They start to favor one side and the tight/weak side gets worse. try to make it as fun as possible. Get an exercise ball and do some of those exercises. Practice your silly faces. Not sure where Robbinsville is. I went to school in Philly and lived in the suburbs of Philly for a couple years. There is a Cranial Technologies clinic in Paramous (sp?). They do the DOC band. They will do a free evaluation or her plagio and tort. Just give them a call. Their website is www.cranialtech.com We have had a ton of folks from the group go there with lots of success. Your ped can write a RX for band therapy and PT. I would go into your 4 month fully informed with the game plan you want to execute. See if your ped wants to be a team player. Take the AAP guidelines, the info from the cranifacial dr and possibly CT. Also, keep track of all the repo and at home pt you are doing. Keep a little journal - it can help with insurance. Take some pictures from the top, the sides, the front and the back (you can see the doc band b & a pics for good angles). Repeat every 2 weeks to to track progress. Try to get the same angles every time. Take these with you. By the time you go you will have 2-3 weeks of good aggressive repo which should yield some results at her age. It may not because of the tort but if it's going to work you should start to see improvement or no worsening. With my daughter we didn't see improvement but she didn't get worse. Good luck and keep us posted. mom to na DOC Grad South Carolina www.thefilyaws.com datb71 <aguinesslover@...> wrote: Thank you . I live in Robbinsville NJ. Guest guest
Hi Debbie: Just wanted to offer you a hug over the computer waves from another mommy who has been there and understands your fears and frustrations. My dd is now 3 1/2 and after 3 bands and LOTS of therapy is 98% plagio and tort free (gets tilty when ill). It is hard to care for a tort baby. It is worth it, and we all know that many parents of severely ill children would gladly trade places, but it still is hard work to care for and correct the tort and plagio. It's OK that you are frustrated. It's OK that you are scared. You are doing the right things for your daughter. Mine was very frustrated at the therapy, positioning, etc. too and I remember crying ALOT about having to make her uncomfortable, etc. It was hard. BUT she loves me and we have a great relationaship - she really, really trusts me to help her, so I think on an unconscious level they know that we are helping them. Try and think about the long term goal of complete healing, and in the meantime try and get away from the situation for small breaks if you can - have dh watch baby and take a walk, a bath, see a movie - whatever can help you combat your stress levels and ward off the overwhelming feelings. Best wishes for a speedy recovery! , Rhiannon's mom --- In Plagiocephaly , " datb71 " <aguinesslover@h...> wrote: > > Hi all. I am new to this group and I am so happy to have found you. Guest guest
Great, great shots! Love the one of Faith and Nearra's big belly! And the new baby is so dear! Nearra is wearing the exact same flip flops that I have on my feet at this very moment, same color even. If you haven't tried them Reef flip flops are exquisitely comfortable! Guest guest
Thanks, Kathy. Guest guest
Thanks, Kathy. Yeah, she is beautiful. Her head was not misshapen at all because it only took one push! That is probably the only benefit of babies 10 months apart! ette From: Down Syndrome Treatment [mailto:Down Syndrome Treatment ] On Behalf Of Kathy Ratkiewicz Sent: Monday, September 18, 2006 10:58 AM Down Syndrome Treatment Subject: RE: New baby Congratulations!! Guest guest
Thanks Carol. Actually is the “runt”! was 9.9 and Dakota was 10lb! It is nice because they don’t seem so fragile when Faith is holding them! Christmas should be a 3 ring circus! ette From: Down Syndrome Treatment [mailto:Down Syndrome Treatment ] On Behalf Of Carol in IL Sent: Monday, September 18, 2006 9:24 AM Down Syndrome Treatment Subject: Re: New baby CONGRATULATIONS ette!!!
