Hi all

I was wondering if anyone has experienced any difficulty with extractions

associated with Glivec, prolonged bleeding or anything? I've got at least

one back tooth that needs pulling out some time soon and another on the

other side will follow.

I've read that Glivec is a sort of coagulant? If that's right, wouldn't that

cause bleeding problems?

Many thanks

Jackie

Hi Jackie,

One of the Gleevec side effects is that it acts as an anti coagulant. This

could cause increased bleeding. If you are not having side effects like

bruising or excessive bleeding for small cuts then I wouldn't worry about

it. If it's still a concern for you, have your GP run an INR test. This will

tell you if your blood has been thinned by the Gleevec.

I would need to talk to the doc and dentist because one of my side effects

is not healing well. If I scrape my leg or arm on a corner. I might not

bleed, but eventually it will turn into a scab, surrounded by a black and

blue mark. and 3-5 weeks later people are STILL looking at it asking what I

did. Expecting of course to hear some mighty story of heroism. being sadly

disappointed by " I ran into the corner of the table. " :-) Maybe I'll have to

start making up better stories.

Yesterday, I had a manicure. and today my cuticles on some of the nails

looked scabbed over. from where she filed the skin (usually accidentally).

But, I expect that will take at least a week to change.

Good luck,

Tammy

Thank you everyone for all your replies.

My fault for getting in this mess - I hate dentists and teeth, really freak

me out. Problem is, these things don't go away.

I don't have a problem with bruises or bleeding, just wafer thin skin. My

body is a patchwork of old scars from some really nasty wounds that haven't

needed antibiotics but have needed dressings on my shins several times.

Hi Jackie: I have not been on here lately, but I had all my top teeth removed

and got dentures well taking my Gleevec. I had no problems at all. I have

mitral valve prolapse, and forgot to tell the Dentist, as we were always told to

be pre-medicated with antibiotics prior to any dental work. Now that protocol

has been changed. Now they are not pre-medicating due to trying to lessen the

use of antibiotics as much as possible. You should be fine.

Hi,

I stopped taking the Gleevec for abut one week before I had an extraction. The

dentist did not want to do it at all, but then after my transplant doctor

affirmed that is would be ok, he did the work. It was sore and took several days

of salt water to get the soreness down, but after about a week, seemed to start

healing. Still learning the problems of Gleevec as I have only been on it for

about 14 months.

I still bruise and my gums still have problems, but it is all better than the

alternative.

Be well,

Walt

Hi , thanks for that information. My feelings about antibiotics are the

same. If they are needed then okay, but otherwise salt washes, rinses etc

should be adequate.

I'm still hoping I don't have to go down that avenue but even if the tooth

can be saved, it's a back tooth (two back teeth) and the end result will be

inevitable at some stage anyway.

Hi Jackie: I see your getting a lot of responses to this tooth extraction. It

varies, but I do agree to check with your CML specialist to see what he thinks.

I had back teeth taken out years ago, and I was told it would make my bottom

teeth spread and leave spaces. Nothing has moved on me in over 30 years. It

depends on what you want to do also, and everyone is different with different

problems. Good Luck with Your Decision.

I hate dentists and hate teeth. The thought of sitting having teeth pulled

out really freaks me out. However they are there and going rotten.

So are you saying that two back teeth removed won't make any difference to

the jaw line? And won't be noticeable?

I told the dentist yesterday about the CML, medication etc and they'll want

to check up on my counts. I'm beginning to think that telling them was a

mistake because I think they'll now make more of it that should be. A

surgeon was even suggested yesterday, how stupid! Maybe they have to cover

their tracks.

I too have one tooth in the far back right bottom that has to come out. It

cracked months ago and does not bother me but I finally made an appointment.

It is a wisdom tooth so it is ok to take it out.

I have had root canals done and never told the dentists about my CML. There

was not a problem.

My counts are all normal and I am PCRU so I don't even think about it.

Hmmmmmm maybe I should?

Hi Jackie: I am just talking from my experience. I noticed a lot of my friends

gettin expensive root canal work, and then getting the teeth extracted anyhow. I

hate Dentists, but my latest experience has been nothing like it was years ago.

I do go to a surgeon for my extractions when I need them. They are leary when

you tell them you have CML or anything related to your blood.

I do not know if you have any dental insurance. We do have it through my

husbands company, and it makes the bill a bit better as to what they cover.
