The only time I got moon face was when I was in the hospital and doing massive doses of prednisone. And when it happened, I remember just waking up one morning and having my face look completely different - it was kind of creepy. That was for a bad ulcerative colitis flare. Since being DX with RA, I have been on it for the past 3 years at varying doses from 60 on down to my present 1 and I never got the moon face again. As far as other side effects go, my cholesterol has definitely gone up and I did have some skin problems for a while, a little bit of weight gain but not too bad (10 pounds on a 5'10" frame is doable). I just went down from 2 to 1 last week and we're hoping to get me off completely soon. Can't wait!!

i've been taking 5mg a day for about 4 or 5 years and while it is difficult to lose weight, i am not yet moon faced. but.. i don't over do the carbs and fat and junk food. i just went up to 10 mg day so not sure what to expect. every time i halved the 5 mg tabs, the inflamation would really flare. hands, even ther muscle tissue, even, it seemed, the pleural areas, would get really bad. i, naturaly, would like to get off of them permanently, but that's the way it is. just thankful it is available.

Will I get moon face and other symptoms if I'm only taking 5mg per day of Prednisone?

Of course each person reacts differently. But I can tell you that I have

been on 10mg prednisone for almost a year. A bit of weight gain has been a

problem (though I was overweight before starting meds), but no moonface or

other side effects (which btw, my doctors monitor carefully). As a matter

of fact, I asked my rheumatologist about the moon face a few months into

taking pred, and he said if I was going to have it, it would have begun

already. I've tried twice to wean off, but have a terrible flare each time.

Hoping to succeed soon.

Also, a friend of mine took 5 mg. per day for years to alleviate allergy

symptoms. This is a very low dose. She had no side effects at all.

Hope this reassures you a bit, but do discuss your concerns with your

doctor.

Hugs, (in Western NY)
