Yes, I have moon face too! When I was first on prednisone in Feb. 1991 I was

on 15 mg. per day for years and never had moon face or gained weight though.

Last December when I was having a lupus flare I had to take 40 mg/day for a

few weeks, then down to 20. That's when I started to get fat! aaaaaaaah!

I'm currently on 20 mg/day and sure wish I knew how to get rid of the belly

fat and bloat especially.

Take Care,

Dianne A. (CO) AIH dx.1985, PSC dx 1996 (but dr. thinks I've had it all

along),

Lupus dx. 1997 along with Sjogren's.

,

I was on Pred. for UC so far only twice. Both times my face swelled and

went down after I was off the medicine. It's hard to tell if it where it

was when I was originally diagnosed 11 yrs. ago

I have been off prednisone now for about 3 months and my face shape is

back to more normal. Someone mentioned this weekend that I had lost

weight. The fat has moved from my face and belly to my ribs and

hips...now I need to lose it permanently. My friend said " oh, so it was

the medicine that made you gain all this weight! " . Fortunately for me,

it is about 15 pounds and not more.

You're about there, but it takes a while to get it out of your system. You

might ask your Dr. for a diuretic. If you're up to it, brisk walking is an

excellent exercise that helps too. Hang in there!

Hello everyone!

I've been taking pred and imuran for almost four months, and have weaned

from 30mg to 12.5mg at present (pred). My face isn't crazy big, but it

definitely is bigger. I know I've read before that this will disappear.

Has that been anyone's experience? At what dose does this subside, if at

all? I'm curious, because from what I understand, it is fat deposits,

so...I don't understand how it could just go away. Here's hoping! Any

insight would be much appreciated. If I know it's just temporary, then I

can laugh about it!!!!!

  • 4 years later...
  • 2 weeks later...

Helen,

Here's our moon face experience. Hunter, 7, started on about 10mg

pred. early Sept., but quickly went up to 15mg, 20mg, 25mg, 30mg and

finally 35mg over the course of 4-6 weeks. Mid-Sept. he had his

school picture taken. By the time we got his pictures back from

school (a couple weeks later) he looked like a different kid. My

husband and I both commented that it was lucky he got his picture

taken when he did. He went from about 50 lbs. to 68 lbs. in less

than two months. We started tapering down in Dec. and he's now been

consistently on 10mg for almost 2 months. He still looks the same

and still weighs 68 lbs.

I know this doesn't answer your question, but I wanted to add to the

thread and get more feedback from others.

I am also very curious as to how long it takes to get back

to " normal " once completely off of pred. Our rheumy said about 4

months, but I'm sure it's different for all.

Stacia and Hunter, 7, systemic
