Search the list archives for bee pollen as there have been some discussions

about this in the past couple of months. After you've read those posts, feel

free to contact me for more information as I take bee pollen for my eyes. It

would be easier for you to peruse and read than to try to reconstruct everything

that was said. . .

If you're using OTC drops and gels, ask your opthalmologist to write a

prescription for those OTCs. The drops I used were very expensive and I saved

hundreds of dollars by having a script; I was using a $15. box every two days,

so having the cost covered by insurance was important.

Hi,

My eyes are also very puffy and have been that way since before I was diagnosed with Graves about two years ago. I hate the puffiness and am very bothered about it. I am told by my Endo that I am in a remission now because my levels have been on the high side of "normal" for two months now. I am thinking of consulting with a cosmetic surgeon to see if anything can be done about the eye puffiness. Please let me know if you hear of anything that helps as well. I would appreciate it.

Thanks,

Carolann

It does help to elevate your head while sleeping. I tended to only use a very soft pillow but now prop my head and shoulders deliberately on a higher filled pillow. Good luck.

Puffy eyes

Help!! I am suffering from thyroid eye disease. My doctor tells me it is moderate. I am so self conscious about my eyes. They are puffy. Is there anything that can be done? They are dry at times and I use OTC eye drops. Until recently, they were tearing quite a bit. If the puffiness would go down, I could live with this.

Please help me if you can. I appreciate your time.

My eyes don't necessarily get puffy, but they do get red and

sore. The eyedrops I use are Murine Tears lubricant eye drops.

I have read that you shouldn't use the kind that " gets the red

out " , or they will further irritate your eyes. My case has been

pretty mild so far.

That is a good idea! If I start to go through the drops like that,

I will certainly ask for a prescription for them. As for bee pollen,

I haven't tried that yet, but will soon-it just happened to "slip my mind".

If the TSH is back to normal, I suspect the eyes will clear up. My muscles

were stiff when i reached normal 11/99. They are slowly becoming loose

enough that I can daydream (eyelids and eyes move) without noticing it.

Indeed, they are alittle watery looking and sometimes tear. But not bad.

My tsh was 0.016 on my last visit about 2 wks ago. I have notice

improvement. Not 100% but any improvement is a blessing. My eyes are not

so stiff. If only the puffiness would go down I would be grateful.

I have been to two specialists about eyes. One was knife happy and the other more reserve. You can have cosmetic surgery but I hear you need to wait at least two years after the onset of eye disease. I won't have surgery unless it is horrible. I hate the puffiness. I wonder at times why me?? Do you ever??

Good idea about the presc. The doctor should have really offered to write a

prec. as he must know I will be using drops for a long time.

I will read posts about bee pollen. Have you noticed any improvement with

bee pollen???

I found the drops Celluvisc very good. They are extra thick drops and

provide good lubrication. It is best to use at night as they cause blurry

vision temporarily. I wish the puffy eyes would go away.

Hi folks,

I'm new to the list, not sure I'm in the right place. Suffered for many

years with Graves, which appeared after the birth of my first child 19 years

ago. After 10 years of problems, beta blockers, PTU, Tapazole, and

occasional remission, finally underwent RAI in 91 (2x) and am now, of

course, hypo. Have felt reasonably well for the past 8 years. However, there

are still some things, though I'm not hyper-, linger as a result of Graves.

I have had some problems with a puffy eye which was dismissed as being

allergy related, so now I'm wondering. I have had repeated, negative tests

for protrusion but nobody ever said anything about puffiness...so to make a

long story short, I'm hoping to still find information and others who have

shared my experience. Whether this is the forum or another group, I guess

I'll soon find out.

Thanks,

Amy

I wanted to say hi to everyone as I am new to this group. Thanks to everyone

for sharing their stories and advise. Graves has changed my life

dramatically and has caused me so much suffering and unhappiness. The only

way I manage to deal with it is by enjoying my return back to college and by

the support of family and friends....they make a big difference by not

allowing me to focus on it all the time. Thanks again for sharing all your

great advice and stories to everyone and I look forward to chatting with you

all again soon.

Thanks,

Hi Amy,

I have thyroid eye disease (TED). I received RAI May 99. Eyes started

acting up about a few months ago. I have lots of tearing and puffiness. I

look awful. I am lucky not to have any bulging. I, too, am looking for any

help or suggestions on the eye problem. I am told the puffiness will not go

away. It may go down a little but, never totally gone. I am anxious to

hear from you.

To tell you the truth, I didn't connect my eye puffiness (is this periorbital

edema?) to my thyroid at all. Having had RAI so long ago, and feeling

relatively well on replacement, I just assumed it was

age/sleep/eyestrain/allergies (I have a lot of sinus problems) related. You've

had RAI pretty recently so things could change. I've never been diagnosed with

TED, never had bulging and feel fortunate since you can still get that after

RAI.

I've found that as others have suggested, sleeping on my back helps. Drinking

lots of water seems to help me also. I'm not an herb person so I don't know of a

lot of the things I've seen here. Cold compresses feel great but I'm not sure

they've helped me enough to do this often. I've also used a cosmetic eye cream

that I kept in the fridge. Felt good but again, I'm not sure it helped. Don't

know if I have anything else to tell....

I have had the problem and now it seems to be my sinuses that make my eyes

hurt and swell at times...I use a HEPA air cleaner in the bedroom and an ice

pack along with 1 Advil will make the swelling go away when it is really

noticeable. Sheri Lynn

Thank you for responding. I appreciate your info. I am not into herbs and

I am hesitant to believe in them. However, I found info on using black tea

bags damp on your eyes for 10 minutes. It seems they have a natural

ingredient that reduces swelling. I will give this a try.

I agree, the cold compresses feel good, but I am not sure what effect it

really has. You mentioned water helps you---does it seem to reduce

swelling? I also wish I could get this tearing to stop.

Thanks again and I look forward to hearing from you.

: I don't want to change your whole world view, but I did want to give some

information to think about. First of all, herbs have been used as medicines for

millenia; allopathic medicine got it's start only a few hundred years ago. Even

that was an attempt by the church of Rome to undermine the midwives, healers and

wise women of the villages in Europe (all of a sudden it was law that only men

could become doctors), but we won't get into that. The Penan people of Borneo

and Malaysia have medicinal uses for over 6500 different plants, and we're

cutting down the Indonesian rainforest at an absolutely alarming rate. We won't

get into that either. However, the cure for AIDS or cancer may be lying in some

tropical valley, or it may already be gone.

Almost all modern medicines in use today have their base in plants. According to

a friend of mine who is a Medical Herbalist, " Herbal medicine is the oldest

system of medicine in the world. The World Health Organization estimates that

85% of the world depends on the use of plants for their healing properties.

Many orthodox medicines have their origin in plant material, often isolating the

plants’ constituents. Herbal medicine, in using the whole plant, provides a

more balanced medicine that avoids the side effects often associated with

prescription medicine. The herbalist combines a modern understanding of the

disease process with knowledge and experience of the healing properties of

plants. Given under the supervision of a trained herbal practitioner, herbal

remedies are completely safe. "

Digitalis (the hear drug) comes from the foxglove plant, and there are many,

many common examples. In the early 1800's a French doctor discovered that the

Native people of the NE United States would make a tea from the inner bark of

the white willow tree or from wintergreen leaves to treat headaches, arthritis

and other ailments. He did some research and 'discovered' that these plants

contain high amounts of natural salycilicates (the latin name for willow is

Salix sp.). The small white pill consumed in the billions today (called

aspirin, or acetylsalycilic acid) is a derivative of a cheap coal tar.

So, you can choose whether or not you want to believe in th healing power of

plants, but at least make an informed decision.

Take care,

Me.

P.S. People all over are turning to herbs and other 'alternative' medicines.

Keep in mind that just because they're 'natural' doesn't mean they can't be

harmful. For something as serious as Grave's it's vital to work with a medical

herbalist or naturopathic doctor rather than self treating. What works for one

person may not necessarily work for another as the emphasis is on treating the

whole person and not just the symptoms.

Thanks for the info on herbs. I am not sure about them but, don't get me

wrong. I would consider them. Can they be any worse that radioactive

iodine??? I do not want to rule out anything; I just want to be well.

You mentioned in another email that we need to exercise lightly. I used to

be into aerobics. Will I ever be able to return to that level of exercise

or is yoga it? Also, I gather from others messages that they seem to wax

and wane as far as symptoms of Graves. Is that typical that symptoms will

come and go? Is is possible to feel good with a tsh of 0.016? I realize I

have several questions. I am just so excited to have found someone who

might be able to help me.

Thanks again,

According to

that

High impact aerobics actually do more harm to your body than good. You should

be able to do something like low impact aerobics, swimming, cycling, not to

mention walking. Yoga exercises work the body in specific ways that can be very

healthful.

For me, I'll stick with tai chi. There are several different forms of tai chi,

but the form that Marcia and I practice (Taoist Tai Chi Society -

http://www.taoist.org) is devoted specifically to health benefit and health

improvement. If you can walk, you can do tai chi. If you can't walk, you can

do tai chi in a wheelchair and it may help you to walk again...seen it happen.

Me.
