Guest guest
Did he have a modified barium swallow? Macey has had 2 ph probes with both showing no acid reflux. But when she had the swallow study it showed that she was refluxing all the way up into her sinuses. Her ENT and GI were always good about working on meds to keep throat and sinus infections away. what she had was bile reflux. It does not cause the carosiveness that acid does but does cause damage in its own way. Plus the burning is there because it is bringing up a fluid into an area that shouldn't have any. We have been in Food Therapy since March with no real success. The therapist is puzzled because sometimes he will eat and other times he won't. When he eats it consists of about 3 - 4 bites of something. I know what he likes, like french fries and yogurt are 2 of his favorites and on bad days I try to offer that, but he still refuses. He does have the laryngo and tracheomalacia pretty severly so that could be one part but not the whole story according to the ENT. The other part we haven't conquered yet....we are leaning towards that he has very bad stomach pains when he has a bowel movement about 2 weeks of each month unexplained/diagnosed, his is sick with a virus about every 2 weeks unexplained/diagnosed, or there is another medical problem we haven't found yet. We are trying everything to entice him and praise him, but he doesn't seem to care much. The therapist is the one who told me to start adding a bit of pediasure to his milk to add teh calories and extra nutrition. So I would put about 2 - 3 ounces of pediasure in 5 oz of milk.We are also seeing a Gastro since May who tells me it is acid reflux for the eating and his stomach pains....but he has had a ph probe test that showed no acid reflux and the 2 meds he is on Prevacid and Axid have made no improvements or changes with him. This doc will only see use every 4 - 6 months and gives me the same answer when I call when is in extreme pain....must be something he ate or he needs stool softner (which is not the case either! he has regular bowel movements even when sick and he hardly eats) He did run a bunch of allergy tests and is negative to all of that. So no food allergies to date. I guess that having to thicken his liquids still is helping a bit....I use Simply Thick alot but also try to use pudding, applesauce and rice cereal when he isn't watching me. He doesn't like it when he knows I put that in...but he needs the calories and nutrition. He recent aversion to milk during the day has been happening for the last month....We are at least forcing him to drink a cup in the morning and one in the evening (milk) and he is giving in for the time being. THanks for the heads up on the water intoxification. I will bring that up on Tuesday with the food therapist and make sure I am avoiding it at all costs.A>> > Do they know why he is not wanting any food? Are there allergies involved? Could he have sores in his mouth that make it painful to eat? Remember too much water can dilute his blood and cause water intoxification. One of the worst things I've ever seen is a toddler that had a stroke from it. I would ask the doctor to delve into why he isn't wanting to eat. Unless there is a virus onboard or something acute then you don't want this to become a situation. (2 years)does not eat much and lately has shyed away from milk. He has been requesting water or apple juice. Our Dr said to go to the store and pick up the Boost Juice Drink (she said it was the equivalent of pediasure but in juice form). I have tried 2 stores/pharmacies and no one has ever heard of it (walmart and riteaid). I am just wondering if this is something I will need to order or possibly find a recipe and make myself. Or even if the product exists....because when I look up BOOST or any other supplemental drink product online I only see the milk based products.ThanksChris A > > > > > > >
Guest guest
What is his weight doing? I know that many 2 and 3 year olds do not eat very much . Many kids just get through these years. I know we stopped focusing on eating and it made a huge difference. It can become a huge power struggle again causing other issues. Milk is not essential in the diet. There are other forms of protein including soy, almond milk and others. Also if he will try to eat other kinds of foods like fresh fruits and veggies. I know it is hard but you might even try making a themed meal with dippers. My kids loved dippers of any kind. Making eating fun can go a very LONG way. The dipping increases calories. Range dressing, BBQ sauce, Cheese sauces etc. Also using cookie cutters or making shaped pancakes and waffles with protein powder that you dip in real maple syrup and butter. Get him involved with cooking with you. My son was making scrambled eggs at 2. My son had many gastric issues and we went the furthest with starting probiotics to regulate the gut flora so he has MUCH less cramping and discomfort. We have never found a GI doctor to be very helpful because unless they can find a specific medical issue they think there is nothing they can do. My son has lots of allergies and has had Eosinophylic gastroenteritis as an infant and bloody stools until he was about 4. We got better when we started IVIg and the eating problems went away. I believe part of it was all the infections and feeling rotten all the time. It is a hard time but my advice would be to add as much fun and socialization around eating rather than insisting that he eat certain things. I personally believe and experience is that things do improve with a positive spin on eating.
