Guest guest
I was just wondering if anyone has heard of Boost coming in a juice form? (2 years)does not eat much and lately has shyed away from milk. He has been requesting water or apple juice. Our Dr said to go to the store and pick up the Boost Juice Drink (she said it was the equivalent of pediasure but in juice form). I have tried 2 stores/pharmacies and no one has ever heard of it (walmart and riteaid). I am just wondering if this is something I will need to order or possibly find a recipe and make myself. Or even if the product exists....because when I look up BOOST or any other supplemental drink product online I only see the milk based products. Guest guest
Do they know why he is not wanting any food? Are there allergies involved? Could he have sores in his mouth that make it painful to eat? Remember too much water can dilute his blood and cause water intoxification. One of the worst things I've ever seen is a toddler that had a stroke from it. I would ask the doctor to delve into why he isn't wanting to eat. Unless there is a virus onboard or something acute then you don't want this to become a situation. His relying on supplements could start a bad food aversion that could take years to get away from. Again I hope this is only a temporary situation but you might want to try to work with his diet before starting supplements. Guest guest
We have been in Food Therapy since March with no real success. The therapist is puzzled because sometimes he will eat and other times he won't. When he eats it consists of about 3 - 4 bites of something. I know what he likes, like french fries and yogurt are 2 of his favorites and on bad days I try to offer that, but he still refuses. He does have the laryngo and tracheomalacia pretty severly so that could be one part but not the whole story according to the ENT. The other part we haven't conquered yet....we are leaning towards that he has very bad stomach pains when he has a bowel movement about 2 weeks of each month unexplained/diagnosed, his is sick with a virus about every 2 weeks unexplained/diagnosed, or there is another medical problem we haven't found yet. We are trying everything to entice him and praise him, but he doesn't seem to care much. The therapist is the one who told me to start adding a bit of pediasure to his milk to add teh calories and extra nutrition. So I would put about 2 - 3 ounces of pediasure in 5 oz of milk. We are also seeing a Gastro since May who tells me it is acid reflux for the eating and his stomach pains....but he has had a ph probe test that showed no acid reflux and the 2 meds he is on Prevacid and Axid have made no improvements or changes with him. This doc will only see use every 4 - 6 months and gives me the same answer when I call when is in extreme pain....must be something he ate or he needs stool softner (which is not the case either! he has regular bowel movements even when sick and he hardly eats) He did run a bunch of allergy tests and is negative to all of that. So no food allergies to date. I guess that having to thicken his liquids still is helping a bit....I use Simply Thick alot but also try to use pudding, applesauce and rice cereal when he isn't watching me. He doesn't like it when he knows I put that in...but he needs the calories and nutrition. He recent aversion to milk during the day has been happening for the last month....We are at least forcing him to drink a cup in the morning and one in the evening (milk) and he is giving in for the time being. THanks for the heads up on the water intoxification. I will bring that up on Tuesday with the food therapist and make sure I am avoiding it at all costs. Guest guest
Sounds like you have an incompetent gastro, I would look elsewhere. It sounds like your child needs to be scoped if he's having so much difficulty. It also sounds to me like he could be constipated- this is what happens to my son when he gets constipated- he stops eating and he starts to have a lot of pain and nausea. And if he has a lot of pain when having a BM that is pretty consistent with constipation. If it is constipation there is a product called Oxypowder that really helps my son. The other thing that I would suggest is to get an x-ray of the bowel area that can see if there is an impaction or significant build-up in his colon. I would press forward and insist on getting a diagnosis, and keep consulting different docs until you get one! Cyndi > > > > > > Do they know why he is not wanting any food? Guest guest
I have never heard of it. Have you ever tried making smoothies for him? You can use frozen fruit and protein powder. I make them frequently for my kids. We think they taste MUCH better than pedisure or boost. When my son was FTT at 2 and 3 and would not eat. I bought Balance Bars and gave him several a day. It seemed to increase his apetite and he would get an extra 500 calories a day just by eating the bars as snacks. Guest guest
You might see if you can get in with a nutritionist also. My son had a problem with his tongue . He did have a food aversion as an infant we think now due to it. It was that his tongue did not move laterally. So he would choke. To this day eating an ice cream cone is very difficult to him. ( not the end of the world) But I would agree with Ursula doing a bit of investigative work would be a good idea.
