Guest guest
Hi NKS Did your wife have any other tests like a Bone Marrow Test???? Sharon T _____ From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of karupps Sent: Sunday, May 23, 2010 11:12 PM Subject: [ ] CML and Fibroid Dear All My wife is under Imatinib since Aug 2008. I just share my thought about the history of her health. Her periods was irregular and heavy in 2008. Doctor took a blood test and advised to go to Gynecologist. But we postponed due to some personal issues. In 2008 she had a fever and diagnosed for CML as WBC count was too high. During ultra scan for liver multiple fibroid was reported as part of the scan report. Hematologist did not warn us about fibroid, he prescribed to take Imatinib. After two years my wife had more bleeding and went to Gynecologist and she had a hysterectomy (Uterus and ovaries removed). My doubt is whether the high WBC count is due to the presence of fibroid or she is really having CML. I will be grateful if any one clarify my above doubt Thanks NKS
Guest guest
Dear Sharon, Recently she did one bone marrow test - BCR/ABL test. It shows 98% of cells negativity for the BCR / ABL rearrangements. Also negative for BCR/ABL gene fusion. WBC is normal in CBC test. Guest guest
NKS - A high WBC count is not an indicator of fibroids, the only blood indicator is iron anemia. You can learn about the causes of fibroids from this article by the Mayo Clinic. http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/uterine-fibroids/DS00078 Pat in Phoenix > > Dear All > > My wife is under Imatinib since Aug 2008. Guest guest
NKS - Thanks for writing on behalf of your wife. When a woman has fibroids she may experience an increase in the white blood count due to anemia which reduces the number of red blood cells in the body. You can learn more about anemia from this link: http://www.anemia.org/patients/faq/ You can learn more about fibroids from this link: http://www.empowher.com/media/reference/uterine-fibroids In terms of the CML diagnosis, the white blood count result is just the start. Her doctor should have ordered additional tests to confirm the diagnosis, including a bone marrow biopsy. You can learn more about this here: http://www.cancer.org/docroot/cri/content/cri_2_4_3x_how_is_leukemia_diagnosed_6\ 2.asp Dealing with both CML and a hysterectomy is bound to be stressful. I hope this information helps your wife, and you as well. Take care, Pat in Phoenix > > Dear All > > My wife is under Imatinib since Aug 2008. Guest guest
She could be having both CML and fibroids--they are totally unrelated. However, the CML may cause her fibroids to bleed more. Fibroids are a type of benign (noncancerous) tumor of the uterus and they can have no symptoms or they can cause heavier periods. CML may affect clotting of the blood--making it less able to clot, which can mean heavier periods, or heavier bleeding from these fibroid tumors. Does this make any sense whatsoever? I hope so--if not, some of our other members may have a better way of explaining. Hope your wife is feeling better. Vicki > > Dear All > > My wife is under Imatinib since Aug 2008.
