Guest guest
Hi Pris, I am lucky to have good insurance through my office. My month's supply of Minocycline cost me $10, along with my $15 co-pay to my Rheumatologist. My doc told me that while she still wants to monitor me monthly, she will not need the frequent blood work she would have done if I had chosen to go on Methatrexate. From what I have read about this particular antibiotic is it is good for Mycoplasmic (sp) bacteria and its link with RA. Also from what I have been reading (and it is a lot) is one may have to be on it for the rest of their life or maybe just many years. But it is a low dose that is taken. Minocycline is also not one of the heavy duty antibiotics that are used for some of the antibiotic-resistant bacteria, so I feel ok taking it. I did take Kay's advice and go on a probiotic too, along with Omega3s, and a good multi-vitamin with b complex.
Guest guest
Hi Britt, I am newly diagnosed too and just went on antibiotic therapy. > Antibiotics didn't help me and OMG did I take a lot of 'em! My doctor thought I had Lyme Disease before I was diagnosed with RA. The Lyme titer came back negative but they still kept me on Doxycycline for a couple of months. > From everything I have read about antibiotic therapy, it can take a year to even begin to see any improvement, and it can take even longer than that. I had to stop taking them because they were messing > up my stomach and I also got bad yeast infections. > Those are a possibility and that is why a probiotic is added. I know someone mentioned eating 8 oz of yogurt daily. While that can be beneficial, it is still not the same strength as taking a probiotic. Plus, if the yogurt is sweetened, sugar can interfere with the beneficial bacteria. I make my own yogurt, it is great! Yet, I still take the probiotic--but not at the same time as I take my Minocycline. > Maybe it depends on the type of antibiotic and the dosage, though.> And definitely the length of time. I was worried about the possible side effects of the drugs like Methatrexate, etc., so I opted for this. I know I need to be patient, but I am also very hopeful. I also think like Kay in that diet plays a big role too, such as wheat glutons, some dairy, and our factory-farmed meats due to their high Omega 6 content. So, overnight, I became a vegetarian. It has not been the easiest, but I think it will help me.
Guest guest
You ar taking Doxycycline, which will kill more of your G Neg friendly colon bacteria (flora)than Minocycline will. Minocycline has other advantages as well. It doesn't make you sensitive to the sun like doxy. It also has 5 times the lipid solubility (penetration into tissue) as doxy, therefore making it more effective, quicker. The disadvantage is that it can cause drug induced lupus, but this is very rare and very rarely irreversible. I know a girl that has been taking minocycline for 7 years without problems. I take a megadose of acidophilous at night before dinner, which is about 1 to 2 hours after my evening dose of minocycline. You want to give the colon time to absorb the antibiotic prior to taking acidophilous. > Hi Britt, > > I am newly diagnosed too and just went on antibiotic therapy. > > > Antibiotics didn't help me and OMG did I take a lot of 'em!
