pcr vs fish test

I have a question about the fish test vs pcr test.

I'm concerned because I heard the pcr is the most recent test and doctors are

not doing the fish test as much. My mom is scheduled to have a fish test at het

next 3 month appointment.

Hi Karine,

It has nothing to do with which test is the newer one.

The most sensitive test is the PCR test, but unless you have already reached

a certain level of remission (CCR) the PCR test is not very accurate.

Do you know what her last results were and from what test it came from.

There is no point in doing a PCR test unless she has achieved CCR by a FISH

test.

This  will be her first fish test and then he is planning on doing another bone

marrow biopsy at her six month. Does this sound like the correct plan?

Thanks,

K

Hi from the UK

I had FISH at diagnosis and then again at about 4 months. It's quite normal to

have a bone marrow at 6 months and again at 12 assuming all is going to plan

(these timings can change depending on results). On pcr, that can be done in

the early months too but mainly to get a baseline and see speed of response

(mine was done at diagnosis and start of treatment then every 3 months or so, on

blood). FISH will basically tell you just as much until you are zero, and

thereafter pcr becomes the key test. I would however ask when they plan to

start doing pcrs because they can have some predictive value even early on and

over here at least that's why they are now done early (as well as but not

instead of FISH and cytogenics/bone marrows).
