Guest guest
Paige, Welcome to our group. I doubt if anyone is ever truly cured of RA, but with proper medications, diet and exercise, RA symptoms can be decreased for many people to the point that RA pain is mostly a memory and the disease is no longer a factor in daily life. My RA was diagnosed in 1999, and I was in extreme pain initially. In June 2001, I learned about the antibiotic protocol (AP), and started on it one month later. I have gotten better ever since to the point that I have been able to drop all prescription drugs except for minocycline. Even there I have been able to reduce my dosage from 100 mg every day to 100 mg every other day (odd calendar days). Some practical advice: 1. Find a doctor who is familiar with the AP. Our group can provide a list of doctors in your area. 2. Go with brand name Minocin, not generic minocycline. 3. Eat lots of salmon. On days when you are not eating salmon, take fish oil supplements, for a daily dosage of 10 g of Omega-3 fatty acids. 4. Go to www.google.com and do a search on + " rheumatoid arthritis " +diet . Avoid foods which are known to aggravate RA, such as beef. 5. Keep any painful joints warm. 6. Avoid harmful medicines if you can, such as prednisone and methotrexate. This is just a start. Guest guest
I do not know if anyone has been cured, but many of us have been put in a total remission....that is no symptoms (pain, swelling) and all negative bloodwork. I think a CURE could be found if this was really researched, but since many people in our health care industry make a great deal of money treating symptoms, there does not seem to be a lot of incentive into real research on what combo on antibiotics would really wipe this disease out!! It is sad to say but a lot of money is made on other peoples misery. Eventually enough family docs and general practitioners will learn about AP and they seem to have less of a problem in giving it a try. Then maybe it will become the treatment of first choice in people diagnosed with various arthritic conditions. It is interesting to note that 18 months after going into remission, I sent a long letter to my old rheumy (the one who said it would not work). I sent the copies of my monthly lab tests as I went on the Minocin therapy. You could see them going slowly into the normal range. I pointed out I had no pain or evidence of RA and was hoping she would now be more willing to continue me on with this treatment. She NEVER answered. Kinda makes you shudder to think this person was suppossed to be concerned for my welfare!!!!!! Martha
Guest guest
Welcome to the group, ! Sorry about your RA diagnosis and that you are feeling down. Do you have a rheumatologist? Do you have a physician who is experienced in alternative/complementary medicine? I believe that diet modifications and alternative therapies are worth a try. Unfortunately, such strategies may not be enough to control your RA. But they often can bring about improvement. Do you have any joint damage? Here's some good reading from the Arthritis Foundation to get you started: " Alternative Therapies " : http://www.arthritis.org/conditions/alttherapies/default.asp (check out the " Integrative Medicine " section) a has much good information at her site: http://rheumatoid.arthritis.freehosting.net/ [ ] Newbie > Hi > I just joined yesterday. I have had bursitis for a while but now have been told I have RA as well. I know they are genetically linked but I really didn't need both! I'm interested in finding out if anyone has used alternative therapies with much success as I am hypersensitive to medication and cannot take anything... I have been using herbal preparations and diet to take the edge off the bursitis but have read that with RA there really isn't any foods that make it worse like with bursitis so I can't control it by cutting things out of my diet aparently. I am 41 and a single mum and being told this latest news just about shattered me... I had my cry yesterday and then decided to look for support groups and get on with things. Thanks. Guest guest
, I found a web site a couple years ago on FIBROMYALGIA and VITIMANS and MINERAL as alternative " relief " . I was RELIGIOUS about these! I bought " individual " of these. Good quality, and followed it to a " T " for several months. Gave up all caffeine, etc. I " felt " wonderful. I FELT. Not the pain aspect mind you of the arthritis, etc. But just " generally " felt " WELL " . But I am AWFUL at 'regimine' with pills! And fell off this " SUPPLEMENT VIT. & MINS. " thing. I do notice a difference. Though slight. It is noticable. But I couldn't keep swallowing all those pills and much less " remember " them all! I don't have Fibromyalgia. But used this alternative for FMS, anyway. It DID seem to work to " relieve " my other health symptoms. Elf wrote: > Hi > I just joined yesterday. Guest guest
Holy moly Deidre! Welcome neighbor! I'm in Jenison Michigan How bout that huh? Another of our group moderators also lives in Kentwood, and another of our members is near Muskegon (or is it Grand Haven Mari?). I'm assuming you have gone to Free Bed for the scanning in Grand Rapids right?? Is your orthotist? I hope so, I've heard rave reviews about her knowledge and has given 's daughter a beautifully rounded head w/the STARband!! I also brought my daughter to MFB, but that was almost 3 yrs ago - eeekkk, before they had the scanner or I'm sure you're in great hands What insurance do you have? I had Priority Health & they covered Abby's as durable medical equipment at 50% coverage which was fine by me Has she rec'd any physical therapy for her torticollis? Well it's gret to have another local in our group What a very small world huh? I've been w/the group darn near 3 yrs and am amazed (and saddened) by all the Grand Rapids area membrs I've met. I have a 7-m-o son, , who has plagiocephaly (or in my opinion brachyocephaly) and has been undergoing physical therapy for a few months now for torticolis as well. It was recommended that we invest in a STARband helmut for him since it was not "going away by itself." We have been scanned (which was a neat process... they scanned his head with this big scanner instead of using traditional methods) and are awaiting his helmut to come and for our insurance to come through (pray God it does). Guest guest
Hi Cherib, First, you need to read. I can give you the premise here but to fully understand it, read the site www.rheumatic.org.Then, read the site www.immed.org. Both of these will help. The book The New Arthritis Breakthrough helps you understand here that most of these diseases are an infectious cause usually a form of mycoplasma and respond well to low dose antibiotic therapy. I felt the same as you..better on antibiotics and that gave me a clue. We do have resources for docs who prescribe this if you have a problem with finding one. I know for me, this worked well and I was able to get off all the GI meds, all the pain pills, all the pred and the methorexate, It is almost 7yrs now and I have such a totally different life. With education, some learning about diet you can also do well. There are many true stories with email addressses on the medical histories part of the site. Feel free to use these people. Hope this has helped Marge > Hi > I am new here. I am trying to find answers to my increasing multiple > health problems. Guest guest
Hi Pody, Welcome. I am very new to this but wanted to say hello. I am sure you will get great advice from people here. Have you considered filtering the emails into another folder? That is what I do so that it doesn't overflow my in-box. I have preemie twins - they were 5 weeks premature and have also been blessed with little to no issues. Just wanted to say hi. We are living in Southern New Hampshire and my husband Troy and I have been living on the East Coast for 6 years. We have now been in his Starband now for about a month and he is doing great (his head has grown an inch since we 1st went in and were measured!). Nick has very little preemie issues (whew) and is growing like my little baby weed that he is (he is 20lbs). Nick took to the band pretty fast and now we mostly have head scratching when it comes off for his morning free range time. I am worried just a tad as we just had it adjusted last week and he can already move it around (more up and down) on his head again..which seems to me maybe he needs it adjusted again? when they can rock it up and down?. I have been wanting to join here for a while now, but the amount of mail made me nervous! but the other group I joined has so little activity..which is worse?!.My main question now is how do you dress baby's head for winter? is the band enough? a scarf around the face? Guest guest
Hi Pody, Welcome to the group!! Please don't worry about your dyslexia, we are not here to judge your grammar. When my baby was banded we put a child's kint cap on her, over her band. It worked out well, it fit great over her band. A little shifting of the band is ok, when they are adjusted the ortho is also leaving room for growth. Once his head grows the band will fit more snug. Please keep us posted on your son's progress. You can set your settings to no email. You'll just have to come to the group site to read and reply to the posts. > Hello All!, > > I am Pody (Po-dee) mommy to Nick who was born 6 weeks early on > 2/9/03. Guest guest
Pody, hi and welcome to the group. Thanks for the introduction. Sounds like your seeing some wonderful correction with Nick's banding treatment! YAY!!!! Awesome news. Girl, my daughter was 6.5 weeks premature and she is going to be 18 months old on the 8th and she just now weighs 20.11, with THANK GOODNESS, not one preemie issue except being pigeon-footed. lol Still not convienced that it is from her being a preemie though. I think she is just too fast and her little feet can't catch up. hehe..... Nick is growing very nicely! Good Luck and please keep us posted on how Nick is doing. Do you have any pictures you could post of him? We love pictures around here. Guest guest
Pody, kristen had her band during the summer, but I bought an older child's size sun hat and it fit nicely over the band - I'm sure you can do the same thing with a winter cap. I view e-mails at the site instead of having my inbox flooded... used to rub her head when the band came off too! It sounds like Nick is adjusting nicely. I remember you posting a while back, right? Guest guest
Hi Pody, Welcome to the group! I'm from the east coast too! Where did you get Nick's band from? We go to Cranial Tech in Connecticut. I'm glad to hear he is doing so well in it. Hannah was born 12/23 and is just 17 lbs . The band is supposed to " teeter " to an extent. It is only supposed to be tight against the head in the areas that stick out the most. The rest has open space to grow into. For instance, Hannah has back right sided flatness, so her band fits tight on the back left and front right. This allows her head to grow in the opposite directions. It does make the band teeter, and that is a good thing as long as it doesn't do it too much. I can always fit my fingers into the place where her flat spot is after an adjustment, but by the time our next appointment rolls around I ususally can't. How often do you go for adjustments? As for keeping warm, I bought Hannah some fleece jackets and sweatshirts with hoods that fit over her band. She has a GAP one with a hood that fits perfectly. It's just snug enough that the hood doesn't fall off. I still haven't met any other banded babies except at NOPCO and Cranial Tech. I have met some grads in my travels though. Good luck with everything. Oh, and I don't get any email. I just come to the website to read. My box was always too full! , mom to Hannah, DOCbanded 5/12 and 8/12 Cape Cod, Ma > Hello All!, > > I am Pody (Po-dee) mommy to Nick who was born 6 weeks early on > 2/9/03. Guest guest
Hi Pody and welcome! I'm glad you have seen great correction thus far - I wish Nick continued rounding! Where are you from in Southern NH? I am orginally from Westford, MA (mom moved to Nashua, and brother now in Goffstown, NH). I relocated to NJ 8 years ago. Kerri and I are currently organizing a get-together for NJ/NY (which will be about 3.5 hours from you), but if you decide to get together with some other locals in NH (and it's on the weekend), I'd love to meet up with you all since we travel up there quite frequently! I am from California and this is my 1st winter dressing a baby (help! lol)I am sure I will get to know a few of you (what 2000 members? lol) but I owuld love to meet up with others who are local? Guest guest
Podycat, We'd love to have you and Nick join us! It's probably going to be near Paramus, NJ, since many of us from this area go/went to Cranial Tech in Paramus, so that seemed like a central point. (but we'd love to have anyone from the area come, regardless of where they sought treatment!) Kerri > I am in a small town called Mont Vernon, abovre Amherst and between Nashua and Manchester. Guest guest
Hi Pody: I'm glad you decided to join us. Glad to hear Nick is adjusting so well to his StarBand. on used to scratch his head whenever we took his band off, too. He had skin afflictions...eczema. But ever since he graduated from his band...he hasn't had itch attacks. Something to look forward to. I've heard a lot of mommas use child caps to put over the band or an adult size ski cap could work, too. Keep us posted with Nick's adjustments. Guest guest
Hi Pody and welcome to the group. The band usually moves a little after it's adjusted, until his head grows into it a little. If you're really concerned you should have them check it. My son Jake(15mo.) was banded last winter(we're in NJ). I never needed to put anything on his head, unless I was going to be outside for a while, then I wrapped a small scarf over the top. But short trips in and out of the car, the band was enough. The band usually keeps them pretty warm. Good luck! > Hello All!, > > I am Pody (Po-dee) mommy to Nick who was born 6 weeks early on > 2/9/03. If you can see an ophthamalogist, they can help you with this. The one I went to had me buy a different kind of natural tears. I had been using Visine, and it wasn't doing it. He had me get some different ones which are also over the counter, but last better. I also got punctal plugs, which helped a lot. If your insurance covers the eye doc, it's well worth the visit. Good luck...I hope you feel better soon. Cary
Guest guest
Hi Toni, Welcome to the group, though I'm sorry you or anyone has to suffer to be here! I have fibromyalgia, OA, and Dercum's disease. I know what you mean about the expense of prescriptions--between my husband and me we have 8 prescriptions and if our health insurance didn't cover part of it, we couldn't get them. I can't believe your doctor wouldn't approve a handicapped placard for more than a short time! My doctor actually changed my paperwork that I had filled out from temporary to permanent. Since there is no cure for any of these diseases, why would anyone think it is temporary? My card is good for 8 years, but at the BMV they said when our license plate is due for renewal in Sept. I could get a regular handicapped plate. I resisted it for a long time, and sometimes still park farther away, but it gets harder and harder to walk even short distances. You have to do what is best for you. As far as living with the unexpected flares, I try to do what I can when I'm feeling good, then even if I am feeling good, take a day off just to conserve energy. My family now knows when I'm down that there's nothing anyone can do except to wait it out and everyone pitches in to do stuff. My husband and I are retired and live alone; our daughter lives nearby and is married with a 3-year old and 10- month old triplets. All I can say to you, is have patience with yourself, courage, pray a lot, and avail yourself of the good support and information in this group! peace, Judi
