Guest guest
There are Trader Joe's all over CA, too. Another good place for teacher gifts is a dollar store. Really! I see cute things in there all the time that I would love to have! And it's not the price, but the thought behind the gift. Trust me on this one <G> Just no Avon, please!!!! As someone who teaches and does receive many gifts at Christmas, I have to agree that it is the thought that counts. Especially if that gift has been made or bought by the child. I have had some beautiful gifts that children have made me. Allyson

I get the Trader Joe's brand organic milk, the Trader Joe's brand heavy cream, pecan halves, decaffeinated Constant Comment tea, Morello cherries in a jar, frozen organic wild blueberries, fresh basil, green beans, extra virgin olive oil, yoghurt, Van Houten cocoa, avocadoes, Castille soap, palm oil, and they used to carry the best canned peaches that I've ever had, but don't seem to have them anymore. One thing you _don't_ want to get there is the cheeses that have been cut and repackaged by the store. They invariably have taken on a bad smell from the refrigerator case. I guess they're not properly sealed.

Oh golly, Niman Ranch bacon and when I'm feeling rich Niman Ranch beef, really good whole milk yogurt, raw nuts of all kinds (occasionally organic, even, and at decent prices) for crispy nuts, dried fruits, jams and nut butters (though I should make my own of the latter), very good and affordable maple syrup, cheap but good wines for cooking (3 Buck Chuck--you Californians know it as Two-Buck Chuck), excellent cheeses including Kerrygold (try the Madrigal), the occasional bit of Kerrygold butter when I'm feeling rich that I eat all by itself like cheese, frozen fish and shellfish, frozen fruits and veggies (favs: mango chunks and filet beans), excellent chocolate--their cocoa-dusted truffles! oh my god!--organic cream and milk at decent prices, fairly decent eggs, bagged salad mix, canned anchovies and sardines, Christmastime pfefferknuse cookies (not NT but I love them--wonder if I could reverse-engineer NT that recipe...) and Silja Swedish rye flatbread, yummy garlic stuffed green olives, pretty darn good and cheap canned marinara sauce, organic rapadura-style sugar at a semi-reasonable price, quite good coffee and not-bad tea (it's where I buy my kombucha-brewing tea)...that's just off the top of my head. Next door to our TJ's in SE PDX is a lovely little mostly-organic produce market called Limbo that sells unpasteurized kombucha, unpasteurized krauts, a couple of different kinds of fresh locally produced artisan misos, locally produced honey (can't tell if it's raw or what), and lots of lovely produce. Guest guest
I don't know why people on this list are so ecstatic about Trader Joe's, there are a few things that really bother me about the store. Nevertheless I find several items there to be quality and cost-effective: extra-virgin olive oil potatoes generic cultured butter (usually i use raw though) wild salmon, frozen I also started buying Designer Whey from them, which by it's claims seems to be processed more or less ideally and is less than 1/4 the price of Goat-tein. But I'm going to look into the processing further before I make a lifetime habit out of it. Things that really bother me about Trader Joe's: low-fat, low-fat, low-fat. They don't even carry whole milk yogurt!!!!!!!!! A whole fridge full of yogurt, and all either skim or low-fat. can you believe it??? They carry a whole slew of nitrate-free bacons, but the one bacon they carry that's pastured, Niman Ranch, they only carry the one cured with Na Nitrite! Niman Ranch makes a nitrate/nitrite-free version, but TJ's doesn't carry it. Utter lack of fresh stuff. They hardly carry anything that doesn't come in a package. No, because my TJs carries at least two different full fat yogurts. I don't know if we're having an impact or what, but I'm discovering just as fullfat things were nearly completely gone, suddenly they're back. The local bigbux hfs suddenly carries four different kinds and even the Food4Less where I shop for weird ethnic stuff has Brown Cow. (Strangely, our local favorite, 's, seems to have stopped making its famous original Honey Yogurt in the big 64 oz container. Only nonfat/lowfat.) Butter is back big time too, which of course is partly the holidays but still, it's a noticeable trend. > They carry a whole slew of nitrate-free bacons, but the one bacon they > carry that's pastured, Niman Ranch, they only carry the one cured with > Na Nitrite! Maybe it's a district thing. You need to organize the locals into demanding healthy fats at your regional TJs. I'm amazed that the lowfat brigade seems to have more power there than here, in the vegan capital of the universe. (There's even a vegan market here, called Food Fight. Who on earth would shop at a place called Food Fight? Vegans, naturally; EVERYTHING's a fight with those people. Drink some cream and calm down!) > Hmm, I think that's what I meant. How does celophaning keep costs > down? Because they don't need scales at the registers and that saves overall labor and equipment costs. All the pkgs are $x, not $x/lb; they're not always the best value that way (never buy bananas at TJs unless you're desperate), but then I normally don't use TJs as a one-stop store. And though they're cellophaned, the produce is usually fresh and good. TJs is where I get the things that make life more pleasant--like nuts, chocolate, decent cooking wine and good cheese--at an affordable price. Fresh produce is something I usually buy next door at the produce market (lovely combination, that) or at the farmer's market. Guest guest
l talked to the manager in Hadley as to wheather they carried a full fat coconut milk....light tastes worst than Thai Kitchen with guar gum. He said it was up to regional buyer as to wheather they carried full fat...would pass it on. Told him lowfat was not a trend in Western MA. where there are more New Englanders brought up on full fat dairy even. Noted all low fat in dairy too. Is the TJ's uncured bacon not pastured? Is very good with very good fat in the pan quality/quantity. The cellophaning of produce is probably a convenience to themselves they use. Put together in warehouse facilities, shipped in and out on shelves quicker. Also healthwise people aren't touching, not taking and leaving. Other than that, haven't found palm oil but will look as someone wrote they got it there. Probably by coconut oil? Is it red/orange? Everytime l go there there seems to be something new and interesting or that l've missed. Always am short on time. Guest guest
Lynn, This could be the second vegan capital in the country if you look at some spots. Don't understand their lowfat routine with Bread and Circus for years being next door to new TJ's doing full fat dairy line fine obviously or they would have at least cut back. Also the customers in TJ's are not the same as Bread and Circus. Bigger proportion over 50 not in office clothes. Maybe Wednesday is senior citizen or something. Have seen it on other days. Atmosphere more comfortable in TJ's. Being a lifelong native l highly doubt they'd find somehow the entire valley went low fat for health reasons or something. Agriculturally rich area built from fat, also 5 colleges close by them. I didn't get the impression that any of these packaged bacons are pastured (I'd assume not if they don't note otherwise ) Niman Ranch's is pastured OR kept in humane pens, so even that's a gamble, but at least it is often pastured. Guest guest
I, too, have been less-than-thrilled with Trader Joe's. (I used to live in Philadelphia, where there is one.) They specialize mostly in a lot of processed foods - organic boxed cereals, chips, cookies, and items like oils, nuts, seeds, nutritional supplements and cleaning products. Many of the nuts and crackers have canola oil and similar nasty things. Although it can be a good resource for certain items, I still think you are way, way better off buying local products from local folks - like many of the people listed on our resource pages! And the co-ops, although they can be expensive, are also better in my opinion since they are member-owned and locally controlled - not part of a huge national chain. Just my two cents, >Hope you find it > better than what I found. > __________________________________ Discover Stay in touch with email, IM, photo sharing and more. They have a website at " www.traderjoes.com " and if you go there and click on " THE NEW FEARLESS FLYER IS HERE " (and put in your area) it show you a copy of their most current monthly flyer with item selections and prices. It doesn't show everything they carry, but will give you an idea. > > I've been looking into shopping at Trader Joe's lately for all my > grocery shopping because I plan on switching to a 100% organic > lifestyle.
