Guest guest
Hello Beth  I was able to lose15 lbs and maintain it since being DX in 2003, using weight watchers and a little ( tiny ) excerise.  From: bethshay22 <bethshay22@...> Subject: [ ] For re diet Date: Monday, August 30, 2010, 11:40 AM  Hi I am fairly new to the cml club and from reading some of your posts, gather that you have really looked into diet. I also think it crucial in laying down a healthy inner environment to give the body the best chance of dealing with Gleevec. Would it be too much to ask you to summarise your main (top 10) dietary choices and also any supplements, There is SO much info out there, it gets quite befuddling! I am already vegetarian and grow a lot of my own veg. If anyone else reads this and similar knowledge and experience I would love to hear about it. Blessings to all! Guest guest
My question is more to do with quality of life enhancing foods. I don't need to lose weight. Thanks though! B -
Guest guest
Thank you for the information on weight watchers! I am trying to budge about 15 lbs, so far with no luck. The last 3 weeks I've been walking or biking 4-5 days. Also, I've been watching everything I eat. Was getting very discouraged, but then measured and have lost half inch here and there. My top 10: 1. Like you, I am somewhat vegetarian, and can easily get organic foods where I live. I really follow the Blood Type A diet and have since just before my cml dx almost 12 years ago. My diet is primarily fruits and veggies, whole grains, soy products, fish and some chicken...also some eggs, no dairy (except fermented, like yogurt, kefir). No red meats. 2. Probably the number 1 supplement to take is Vit D and the preparation should be in an oil (like coconut or olive oil) for better absorption. Easily take 2000 IU a day. If you have never had it done, have your blood level of Vit D tested to know where you are. Most of us are low. Vit D is called the anti-cancer vitamin because it has to do with cell differentiation. A naturopath would like to see your level at the high end of the normal range, or even sl. above, like 80-100........many of us test at the bottom of the range, like 35. 3. What I know and follow has been some from reading but mainly from working with some alternative health care professionals, like naturopaths (licensed in Oregon, where I live). To avoid stomach irritation, I am using slippery elm, which you can get in powder form at a health food store. It is demulcent that coats your digestive track. It might also come in herbal tea form or bark to make tea. I put 1/2 tsp in about 1/2 c warm water, let set for 15 min and then drink it. 4. Because the drugs we are taking are highly acid, it is important I think to offset this with a more alkaline diet (which your diet is). This also means limiting carbonated drinks which are not healthy anyway (and take calcium away from your bones)...they are highly acid. Fresh lemon or lime juice in water is a nice alkaline drink. 5. Cod liver oil has many benefits for health.....better than flax oil because it is more complete (but ground flax seed is a good addition to the diet). My newest alternative practitioner said to put the cod liver oil in about 1 tbl of whole milk yogurt and whip it up to emulsify it....that it will pass through the liver better (where it is metabolized) and be more beneficial in general. 6. Use some good quality probiotic to keep the good gut bacteria healthy. Much of your immune system is based in the gut. Also beneficial is any fermented foods, like yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut (which I don't like) and Miso. 7. I do drink green tea.......and it is the base of many beverages that I drink. I keep it in the refrig, fill a glass about 1/4 with an organic fruit juice and fill with green tea. I like to flavor it like this.....and for me, water is boring. 8. You can support your liver if needed (higher normal ranges in blood tests) with more greens in your diet. 9. Anything else that I am doing is more based on my specific side effects and advice from a professional. To some this may sound like a lot of stuff, but it really is not. It just means eating whole foods, and staying away from processed foods. I also sometimes juice but more often use a high speed blender to mix foods like greens (which I am not that fond of) into purchased carrot juice. Also, as mentioned before here on the list, I basically only use Ezekial bread, with has no flour and is 100% sprouted grains. Anything sprouted is easier to absorb the nutrients from. Glad to answer your question Beth....let me know if you need any additional information or clarification. C. from Eugene, Oregon
Guest guest
That's brilliant ... mainly because I am almost on board with everything you mentioned, but WILL get vit D, had been considering slippery elm to protect the gut (or aloe vera) I do drink carbonated water with a small amount of elderfower or ginger syrup. Is the fizzy water not good. I would never drink a fizzy drink normally, although saying that I have been craving a small half bottle of lager beer recently!!! Do you drink any alcohol? Do you drink any tea or coffee _ you know what we English are like for tea, but I never normally have more than two cups in a day. I make all my food fresh, mostly organic from the garden and sometimes juice - feel it would be good to do more! Am very aware of the ph and do test regularly for alkalinity. Do you know anything about eastern herbs to help the system cope with the toxicity? Never eat hard cheeses and try to stay off wheat 9your grain bread sounds great!)... bit of feta or goats cheese - mostly fruit/veg/salad and occasionally fish if I am out. Small amount of milk in the English tea! I will get some probiotics as I haven't done so yet. I do have the odd biscuit, dried fruits, even choc as I feel a little bit of something like that probably does little harm. What do you think! Thanks for your time and inspiration to we new club members! love Beth in England > > > > Hi > > > > I am fairly new to the cml club and from reading some of your posts, gather that you have really looked into diet. Guest guest
Hi: Weight Watchers is the best diet, and it works. My problem is that I cannot get my mind on it to do it. I find if your mind is not willing then its hard to do it. I have done it a few times, and lost weight. Then I just went back to old eating habits, and mostly emotional eating. I would love to know if anyone is battling emotional eating. I eat something I should not eat, and I am very aware of it. I still do it. Then I will be good for a day or two, and then back to old habits. Plus, I did gain a lot of weight after I started the Gleevec, but I am not blaming it all on the Gleevec. Thats great that your walking and doing the diet. > > > From: bethshay22 <bethshay22@...> > Subject: [ ] For re diet > > Date: Monday, August 30, 2010, 11:40 AM > > > Â > > > > Hi > > I am fairly new to the cml club and from reading some of your posts, gather that you have really looked into diet. Guest guest
Hi: I did gain weight on the Gleevec, but I have gone up and down with the weight. I know most of my problem is from nerves, and just grabbing something like comfort food. I do not have any real bad edema. I get in the ankles once in awhile.
