Guest guest
Hello All, Several years ago I had trouble with leg jerks at night which was brought out by a sleep study and Neurontin (gabapentin) was prescribed at 800 mg per night. I had similar problems and finally reduced it to half of the smallest capsule made. That's 50 mg for 200# body weight which has been doing the job just fine. Every time I run out for a day or two, the leg jerks come back. A lot has to do with how much I push myself during the day. I can't imagine what a child could do at 50# or less. Dosage rates are very personal and need to be adjusted accordingly. My personal philosophy is use the minimum to do the job as you might need more later and avoid side effects. Guest guest
I am on the absolute highest dose, and it works well. But I also take other drugs, as well.
Guest guest
, How high is your dose and what else do you take for pain? Did you gain weight from the drug and how long did it take before it started to work, I tried it long ago but nothing helped the burning or Lyrica as well. Thanks Joyce > >
Guest guest
I was prescribed Neurontin over 7 yrs ago. My new neurologist instantly changed that for Gabapentin, which for all intent and purposes does the job. I'm pretty much on the minimum dosage of 2x300mg 3-4 times a day.. but I self medicate when things get abit out of control. ie. the leg spasms that can go on for too long. worse case has been 20 sec spasm every 1-1½ min but can go on for 3-4 days before I regain control. Rest and the meds are the key... actually not pushing the envelope in the first would be smarter..but I've never been the brightest of lads. Then in all honesty even being a good boy hasn't always been the answer either, the spasms come when the do and I deal. Take good care Joyce, Mark > >
Guest guest
Hello Mark and All, As far as I know, Gabapentin is the generic name for Neurontin. At any rate, that's what I take before bedtime each night with a dose of 50 mg which is enough to stop the nighttime twitches and leg jerks. Guest guest
Dear Dee, Yes, I was on neurontin and it elevated my creatinine serum levels in my blood and I began producing too much potassium. Now I have to take drugs to get rid of the excess potassium. As a result, I am on a potassium free diet and the doctor said it all started when I was put on neurontin. He looked it up and it said that it can cause renal failure. I am trying to cope with that now and it is not easy. Ask your druggist or go to www.drugstore.com. I looked it up and stopped taking it and also stopped seeing the N/P who prescribed it. It happened to me, but it doesn't mean it will happen to everyone, but if you watch your serum levels and they continue to be normal, then it shouldn't be a problem for you, but I just wanted to share my experience with you since you asked the question. Guest guest
Please watch out for Neurontin! I thought I had the flu two weeks after I had started taking it. After developing rash, I went to the doctor and was admitted to the hospital and placed in Intensive Care. One more pill and it would have killed me! It's on our list for CMT patients to beware of! Please be careful!!!! Margaret Lee > > > > Why not do both types of research? > > >
Guest guest
Margaret, Neurontin is not on the general 2005 Medication Alert List or the expanded list. It can be very useful in managing CMT pain. Your experience was unfortunate. But nonetheless, a good warning to all of us, be careful with what you are prescribed, talk to and ask questions of your doctor and pharmacist and immediately report any adverse effects. Guest guest
Margaret - So sorry you had a bad experience with Neurontin. It is NOT on the list of harmful medications for those with CMT. I would think that you had an allergic reaction to gabapentin (the generic name) or perhaps it was contraindicated with something else you take. It has been very helpful in managing my sons pain. Guest guest
Hello Margaret Lee, I think that it is often given in too large of a dose. I take 50mg each night before bedtime to help prevent spasms along with 5mg of flexeril. This has been going on for years and works quite well for me. Generic name is gabapentin and it was prescribed by a sleep specialist. I reduced the dosage in order to avoid the side effects. 75 EdM from NH
Guest guest
I've been taking 3000mg of Neurontin for a number of years and have had no problems with it. Have you ever had toxic shock to know what it feels like? Tommy
Guest guest
According to some people, Ambien actually increases pain. See this thread: !!!!!!Must read if you are an ambien user!!!!!!!! - I have had FM for 5 y http://www.prohealth.com/me-cfs/blog/boardDetail.cfm?id=1425960 Ellen Neurontin Hi Everyone, just wondring if anyone has any experiences with using Neurontin for pain in CFS/Fibro? and if it is helpful? I am currently taking Vicodin and Xanax for pain, and Ibuprofen, Ambien to help sleep. Any input is appreciated, Thanks, Randy
Guest guest
Dear Randy, I was on Neurontin for years and it did nothing for pain that comes with CFS. Neurontin is a drug that is supposed to calm the brain down so that seizures do not happen. It did not ease any of the symptoms of CFS and I was glad to stop it when I did about 10 years ago. Guest guest
Hi Randy, I was on neurontin for 8 yrs. it did not help with the pain, turned me into a zombie and gave me a severe tremor. Doctors love to throw this drug at people who are experiencing pain when they don't know how to treat it. It may partially mask symptoms for some people. It is not addictive but you do have to do a slow titration off from it. I'm anti neurontin because drs use it as a crutch for unexplained pain. Have you tried acupuncture? It is one of my most successful forms if treatment. I've had cfids/fm for 19 years. Peace be with you and all that jazz Chardale Irvine On Jul 2, 2012, at 4:20 PM, " Randy " <randydean3@...> wrote: > Hi Everyone, > > just wondring if anyone has any experiences with using Neurontin for pain in CFS/Fibro? and if it is helpful?
