Hi,

My daughter is a dancer. She does mostly ballet but also does tap, jazz and

lyrical. I think the exercise is VERY beneficial with her condition. Sometimes

I wish she could just dance because when that's all she's doing everything is

peaceful. She dances a minimum of 2 hours most days and goes to the studio and

gives herself class on days when they're not having it. Now, if we can just get

her through high school.

Hi All,

Just fyi, it was my son's psychiatrist who recommended omega 3 fish oil

about five years ago.. not a naturopath.

She is a conventionally trained child psychiatrist but she was

convinced enough to tell us about it, along with her prescription for

concerta. (that was awhile ago when my son was in 2nd grade) He spent

3 years on it, then I detoxified him from it as a stimulant (that was

really hard) because I felt it was effecting his mood... he was

irritable and nasty and mostly ODDish.

He was off of it for four years, this summer we restarted with

strattera, a low dose (he should be on 80mg for his size) but he is on

25 mg. He reports that it makes a huge difference in his ability to

relate to other kids. It also help him initiate and complete tasks.

It is still not a perfect answer - my suspicion is that there is more

to his neuro story than ADHD.. but I am trying to keep tabs and be

patient. It is hard to know how much to be preventative. ( I don't

want him to self-medicate...)

He is pretty motivated to pass school this year(also 130 plus IQ) and I

am trying to learn not to expect too much and not be a nag. (we are seeing

a therapist/counselor together to help with negotiations so he feels

empowerered and I can let go of concerns about task completion)

He is also a dancer which helps very much, in my opinion,

neurologically.. does anyone else have opinions regarding movement/dance

and anxiety disorders?

thanks,

Alice

Hi,

Does anyone know how much fish oil we're supposed to give them? My daughter

weighs 110-115 pounds. Also does it need to be any particular brand or can I

just get some from the drug store? I mentioned her dancing before. I also

think it's good because it really helped her self esteem. She got to be the

Sugar Plum Fairy in the studio's Christmas show and that gave her such a boost.

Unfortunately, the teacher who had really taken a personal interest in her moved

suddenly over the Christmas break. I don't know what we're going to do about

that.

Hi Bren,

cool...my son was the nutcracker - the youngest one in 30 plus years.

(he is 14) He unfortunately become more dance resistant, but also more

interested in modern/contemporary..

I think it helps him SO much.

He had a performance last night, and after he said, spontaneously

" Mom, I really love to dance. " and then he realized what he had said,

followed with " but don't hold that against me if I want to quit. "

I just remained quiet. It's such a perfect example of a teen moment, I

think.

I give my son 1000 mg. (two chewable pills) of fish oil.

Hi, Alice,

Thanks for the info about the omega 3. Lacey is relaxed and usually happy

when coming from dance. Since homeschooling she is able to be there 5 days a

week. This year they asked her to be an assistant ballet teacher and she

assists in teaching 5 classes. I believe the exercise and emotional outlet of

dance is so helpful. Sorry I haven't responded sooner. She had a bad day

yesterday and I had to deal with that and had no time. She had two bad days in

a row and by last night I was exhausted. And there was another day when we lost

the whole day to ocd behavior.

Thanks,

Bren
