Anyone tried to augment their SSRI with Buspiron? or Inositol?

I am meeting with my sons' psychiatrist on Thursday to discuss next

moves with his medications. So far, he appears to be med resistant

and has tried 3 different SSRI's, over a 2 year period, with no

notable difference. He is currently on Celexa (and yes, appears to

have gained weight... probably about 10 lbs.) and she wants to

introduce the tranquilizer Buspiron to augment the Celexa. She says

it is a non-addicting, low side effect tranquilizer.

The idea of giving him this has been hard for me to take. I have just

read in an old post that there is an OTC B Vitamin called Inositol

that has been used in augmentation as well, but the post was written 3

years ago, and I would like to find someone who has gone this route

more recently.

I am currently reading Dr. March's book on pediatric OCD. It was

written in 2007, and appears to be very current. If I am reading it

correctly, he thinks that there should be no other med category for

OCD treatment other than an SSRI. I have read in other places that

Buspiron should only be used for Generalized Anxiety Disorder

treatment and not OCD. I am completely overwhelmed with making these

decisions and thought I would reach out to the group for help.

Thanks in advance.

My DD (12) switched back in May from 60 mgs. Prozac and 1.25 mgs.

Zyprexa to 60 mgs. Prozac and 45 mgs. Buspar. It's been wonderful! No

more fatigue. She's done really well on that combination. I actually

didn't think Buspar would work, because it's so mild, so I would try it

and see with the SSRI.

Okay, I could be wrong here (correct me anyone if I am), but I thought

that Inositol and SSRIs together was a no-no. Don't they both raise

serotonin in the brain? I'm thinking a doc told me that long ago and

warned me to be careful of serotonin syndrome. Please double check

before taking my word for it though, because I can't remember anything

anymore. My brain in mush for remembering the important stuff, but I

could sing you the theme song from Gilligan's Island without even

trying hard. lol

You can use inositol with it but I would do it with the knowledge of

the prescribing doctor. Due to the possibility, as you said, of

serotonin syndrome. Here's a portion of Penzel's article:

" We had a number of OCD patients, who were only getting partial

relief from prescription antidepressants, so we decided to suggest

the possibility of their trying inositol as an augmenting agent, in

addition to what they were already taking. I should mention here that

our clinic is a rather busy treatment center, and unfortunately, not

really geared toward conducting research, so we really didn't collect

any data on this. I know my learned colleagues will shake their heads

at this, and they would be right. In any case, we started to see some

positive results among some of those who tried it. In most cases,

these results ranged from at least mild to moderate relief of

symptoms. A few reported even more improvement. We have generally

built up our patients over a six-week period, starting with 1

teaspoon (2gms) twice per day, and going as high as 3 teaspoons,

three times per day. It turned out that not everyone required the

full 18 grams used in the Fux study. One person was seen to improve

on just 2 grams daily. "

BJ,

don't feel bad. You do know the three signs of old age, don't you?

The first one is memory loss. I don't remember the other two.
