I really understand your frustration over the medicine not working. I take

zyprexa myself for PTSD and have worked myself down to one every other night.

My dr. said it stayed in my system for 48 hours. Don't know if he's right but

that's what he said. If it is still making him jittery, maybe cutting back how

often would help -- but don't listen to me. I'm no dr.. Just another frustrated

mom.

My 13 year old son, diagnosed this year with OCD, had a bad time of it at the

end of November. Per the psych suggestion, we kept him out of school for the

addition, we signed him up for intensive out-patient therapy at the

Bio-Behavorial Center in Great Neck, NY. He attended ERP therapy everyday for 90

minutes a day (continues to do so) and seemed to be getting better. The psych

also increased his prozac to 40 mg and added Zyprexa at 2.5 mg twice a day.

Well, he went back to school last Wed, Thurs and Fri and we congratulated him on

this. But today, (Monday), he said he couldn't go in this am. His said his OCD

does not want him to go in today - he's having a bad day.

As you can imagine, I am beside myself. Just when you think things are starting

to appear improved . . . He gained 15 lbs from the Zyprexa so the psych tried

Geodon (which made him shaky) and then Seroquel (which also made him shaky and

jittery). The Zyprexa seemed to be working so he went back on but this weekend,

he seemed very jittery and preoccupied. Also his personality seems to be

changing. Don't know if this is the meds, puberty and adolescence, the OCD

getting worse, or a combination of all of the above.

Just feel like crying. Any thoughts any of you have would be appreciated. Thanks

for listening.

Thanks . We called the psych today but wouldn't you know it, he's on

vacation through 1/14. Maybe I'll try giving it to him once a day instead of

twice and see if that makes a difference.

Hi , regarding missed school, he does have legitmate/excused

reasons, and I don't think they count his in-home/homebound time at

all. I know our system had a 20 absence limit and we'd get a mailed

letter once it hit 10 to call the school, but the principal always

said he knew ours were legitimate excuses/illnesses, not to worry

about it.

Age 13 -- well, good luck, yes I think puberty, growth spurts, etc.,

can all play a part.

Hello ,

We went through similar. I wonder if your pharmacist would be

helpful to ask about this. I have found ours sometimes more helpful

than our doctor.

Very hard to know what is contributing to current challenges, but

when you say jittery it seems to make sense it has to do with meds.

It's possible it's the prozak if he was not on that high a dose

before, might be worth trying cutting back. Check with pharmacist on

this.

Been there and know how upsetting and concerning it all is. Hang in

there.

>For the group;

As a school counselor myself, I am proud and very pleased to hear of

compassion coming from school counselors who understand the need for

students with anxiety to take care of themselves. Many times I have

supported kids (breathing, walking, checking in, counseling etc) with

anxiety/panic and run interference with the teachers/administration.

(although I must say at my school, there is an open minded attitude

and much support for kids) That said, I know that there is an agenda

for schools and yes, they probably can hold a student back if they

have not covered the material. Perhaps there are alternatives like

summer school - or you could negotiate a schedule for academics that

will work for everyone.

Is he on a 504 plan? How is the special educaiton at the school?

Most of all I would say try not to alienate the administration - be

strong and clear about your child's needs, but try to curb

frustration with the " ignorance " of the system...
