A regular dose of Xanax or Klonopin helps. Mine is mild, but my dad has "Restless Leg Syndrome," and also takes Xanax for it. (My worse problem at night with my legs is my feet... my toes throb. I think it's from Peripheral Neuropathy, that I have, though.)
Guest guest
Sue . . . I find my legs cramp a night if I'm not getting enough calcum or magnesium . .. if I'm not drinking enough water . . . if I've been on my feet all day. . . or if my legs have swollen during the day and the swelling is going down at night. . . Occasionally I take one-half a diuretic pill if my legs are swelling badly . .. this can make my legs cramp at night. I do better if I stretch my legs before bedtime. Taking hot bath helps too. Guest guest
Hi Matt, Certain prescription drugs and lack of vitamins, and nutrients can cause leg cramps. Massage, and warm baths can also be beneficial. Kay
Guest guest
Try drinking Tonic water through the day. It has quinine in it, which is a muscle relaxer or quinine tablets orally. For nocturnal leg cramps, the dosage is 200-300 mg at night. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quinine#Dosing_and_indication
Guest guest
Tamara, My neurologist prescribed 10 mg Baclofin at bedtime. It took a few days to work, but it has really solved night cramps for me. Jim
Guest guest
Jim, My doc prescribe neurotin. It's 100 mg. You start with one and can work up to 8 at bedtime. I have taken one the last two night. Wake up with awful hangover feeling. YUK! I did get some sleep but can't function the next morning. What is Baclofin? Actually I will look it up. Does it make you feel bad the next morning? Tamara
Guest guest
Tamara, 800 mg at night?! I'm surprised because the standard dose of Neurontin is 900 mg * per day *, that's 300 mg throughout the day (during a 24 hour period) While higher doses are sometimes used, ramping up to dose should be done slowly, very slowly with going to anything over the 900. I ramped up to 900 mg over one weekend. I felt a bit 'different' after that first 100 mg dose the next morning, but woke up fine the next morning. Same when I stopped taking it, I unramped down over a weekend. Neurontin works on the chemicals in your brain that causes so much electricity in the nerves. Read all about it at http://www.rxlist.com/neurontin-drug.htm Gretchen
Guest guest
Hello Tamara, Baclofen is a muscle relaxer. As I understand it, Baclofen is fairly strong, but 10 mg at night is a relatively low dose. I take Lyrica and Nortriptylene at night, too. I've kept these two drugs and stopped Baclofen and the cramps return. I wish you luck. The pain from these cramps os amazing. Jim
Guest guest
I used to get leg cramps at night. I started doing two things and am not sure which helped but I no longer get the leg cramps. First, I take a magnesium supplement twice a day. Second, I stretch my calfs most days, or at least 5x a week. I try to stretch other parts of my body as well on a regular basis. I would call it yoga, but I am so not flexible that I think it is " stretching " it to call it yoga. Good luck. J. Warren
Guest guest
Tamara, I don't suffer from leg cramps, but my Homeopath mentioned that calcium and magnesium are great for a bunch of things and leg cramps were on the list. Good luck!
Guest guest
Gretchen, Yeah at this point I will stick to the 100mg. I am very sensitive to most meds. They want me to take 5 hydrocodone a day but I never go past three. I have been on it for a while. I also take savella. Its a fairly new med. I think I may just try to get off of everything once I get the spinal stimulater. My trial starts Monday. I wear it for 5 days. I am hoping for a miracle. I will let you know. Guest guest
, Believe me I have so tried it. Nothing. My problem seems to be my job. The longer I stay on my feet the worse it seems. I have done stretching. Calcium and mag. epsom salt bath. Nerve pain cream. Elevating feet..the list goes on. Tamara
Guest guest
Hello Tamara I use a small amount of Neurontin 50 mg. and 400 mg. of Skelaxin or 25 mg. of Flexural before bed at night which keeps the cramps and jerks away for sound sleep. This has been going on for 20 - 30 years now and the cramps come back if I turn it off. I have HNPP but I think it will work just as well for CMT as I have identical physical symptoms as CMT. Guest guest
Try taking some calcium/magnesium about an hour before bedtime, get it in a Gelcap if you can find it--it is released more quickly into your system and should help with relaxing the muscles. Guest guest
Even before I was diagnosed with RA I had a problem with my legs. My doc put me on requip for restless leg syndrome. I had such relief I couldn't believe it. I also take magnesium and iron to help with the cramping. If you do take extra iron do yourself a favor and pair it up with a stool softner. This trio has done wonders. My legs used to twitch but they also ached. Since the RA of course I have some pain that is caused through that but I still think that the requip along with the supplements really help me..
