Guest guest
Great...now the medication police will be all over the place. Let them live my life, that's all I can say. Yeah, I medicate my kid because it makes my son nice and quiet and I don't have to deal with any real issues. I could scream. I hate Frontline. Guest guest
My daughter is 16 and has bipolar in addition to OCD/anxiety. We were watching a show where a girl with panic disorder went off her med because the girl said it made her feel like a zombie. My dd takes 4 meds, so I asked her if her meds made her feel like that? And she said, are you kidding, I feel like a maniac without meds. Meds make me feel normal and to be able to function normally. So, I don't care what other people think, sometimes they are absolutely necessary and we all do what we need to do for our children. Kim In a message dated 1/6/2008 8:01:00 A.M. Guest guest
Funny, I had a similar reaction! How many children committed suicide before there were drugs, or had no life...? I think it depends on the severity of what you are dealing with, it is then clear. I have said it before, at the point at which we went the drug route I would have given our son arscenic if I thought it would work. Prior to that point I was, and still am, big on alternative remedies. You do what works, or helps, if only that were the end of it.... Pop a pill and it's all better...NOT. As you say most people have no idea what life with OCD/Mental Illness is like. The drugs are certainly not perfect, and it is lousy that essentially our kids are the guinea pigs being learned on. Guest guest
I think that's the main point, if you are better on the meds than off!!! If it's not the right medication you will feel worse, but sometimes/often it's a process to find what works, medication is no different. For the record I use only alternative remedies, they really work for me, no drug has ever made me feel better(33yrs of trying), only worse. My son, on the other hand has been helped/made worse, by medication. He also takes vitamins and an herbal remedy(prescribed by a TCM person) which seem to help, particularily in terms of anxiety in general, but would not cut back the OCD on their own. So, I believe in doing whatever works, proof is in the result. Barb > > My daughter is 16 and has bipolar in addition to OCD/anxiety. Guest guest
I think when the diagnosis is clear, drugs are wonderful and certainly have taken troubled lives and turned them completely around. I have a problem when children are 2 and 3 years old, undisciplined and into the " terribles " and they are prescribed medications. I do feel as a society, we are way too quick to medicate our children for anything and everything. I have been there with my son's ocd at his worst point. I agree -- I would have given arsenic if it would just stop those darn thoughts. No one wants our children to have to live like that. In addition, many of us simply do not live where there are qualified therapists even remotely close and medication is the only viable option we have. barb <barbnesrallah@...> wrote: Funny, I had a similar reaction! Guest guest
It always seems there are extremes and/or abuses at both ends of an issue. And that is what the media usually jumps on. Guest guest
It will be interesting to see if there are clear cases of successes, or more of an emphasis on negative stories. I used to work at WGBH (Frontline's producer) and knowing those people, it's going to be more of an overmedication emphasis. We'll see... But again, please, try to live life with a previously sunny and then suicidal child and tell me that Celexa is a mistake, you know???
