Glad you're home, , I hope your dw feels better soon. Anne Back homeHi, everybody,My wife and I got home last night from Mayo Clinic. The trip was wellworth it because we brought back a few answers to her health issues(we think). It seem that, among other problems, her bone marrow is not working asefficiently as it should for someone her age. That's why she has hadlots of low blood counts and such lately. However, the hematologistis convinced this is because of some of the medication she is on. Right now she is getting off the meds that she can do without or islooking for alternatives that won't affect bone marrow. We have to go back the week after next to do more about her migraineheadaches. We'll also have another trip at the end of the month. Butfor now things look promising. Thanks for letting me keep you updated.

getting of the meds helps her, I hope they can also do something about

those migraines, they're awful. Please keep us informed.

Welcome back, Judy. I had to have a transfusion too despite the

surgeon saying that I didnt lose that much. Strange. But it all works out.

Now be a good girl and do your PT ;)

Hello All,

I am new to the list, had my right knee done May 7th, will be 3 wks post-op on Monday. Judy, you will be amazed at how quickly you will start feeling better. I had a blood transfusion as well, I couldn't take the iron before my surgery because it upset my stomach.

I echo re the PT. It helps so much. I have transitioned from walker to cane. While this has not been a picnic, it has been so much better than I expected. I think when we have lived with pain so long we are suprised when we actually get better.

Take care,

Judy, what were the medical issues if I may ask? I am coming up on a July 9 surgery date myself for a LTHR and I just like to hear other people's hospital experiences so I know everything better of what to maybe expect for myself.

I reacted badly to the combination of anesthic and narcotic, my bp plunged and stayed low for 3 days (65/42) then Im forgot to breathe, finally my hematacrit (sp?) dropped to 21 and I had to be transfused.

Am getting more like myself each day ....thank goodness

Hmmm, sounds a lot like when we've taken our kids off to dorms/ first

apartments-although we usually had extras and odd stuff they settled for

instead of new. ; )

Bet it's nice to settle back into your own home again-happy new old condo!

Our condo has been repaired and and I are back in our home after

seven months of living in a hotel, then with my niece following Hurricane

Ike. We've been so busy and I am so far behind in my email, I'm not even

trying to catch up.

Have you every replaced absolutely everything in your house? Mops, brooms,

tools, salt, pepper, plus shakers for both, dishes, pots, pans, bake ware,

mixer, cooking and eating utensils, knives, can opener, sheets, towels, wash

cloths, shower curtains and rods, iron, ironing board, cleaning supplies,

bath soap, shampoo, toothpaste, mouthwash, telephones, etc. etc. etc. I've

made two trips to Wal-Mart this week and spent over $1,000! I'm not finished

yet.

and I attended a concert Wednesday at the 1894 Grand Opera House ...

Izthak Perlman, no less. He is not only the greatest violinist in the world,

but a very funny man. He wheeled out onto the stage on a little red scooter

and sat there making us laugh with his quips, and sometimes cry, the music

was so beautiful. Especially when he played the Theme from Schindler's List.

It was a wonderful break for us.

Kim,

I just went back to look for an email I read that I thought I kept. One of the

monitors, I thought, said we might get on a list of others who have had that

book and might be done with it and want to sell it.

If they know of anyone, or if anyone wants to sell their used book, I would love

to know.

Aqua went okay without prescription drugs. Stopped at local library

to check out " Total Knee Replacement " book. So wish I knew about that

book prior to my surgery. Never in my wildest dreams would I think I

would still be having issues six weeks postop, but I am. And this

book would have been a wonderful resource. Anyone not yet having

surgery should go find a copy. Well worth it.

Came home and a bit nervous, as I was getting really stiff. Why does

humidity affect joints? It is raining here in Minnesota and I seem to

stiffen up even more when it is humid. I had a lot of trouble getting

out of the car. My legs and feet are so darn long that I am at the

limit on how far I can move seats back. My hubby is shorter, and one

time commented to just move the seat back and stretch out. The seat

was back all the way! No room. So like I said, nervous getting out.

Panicked a bit, but eventually got out.

Came inside and immediately sat (not lay) on the bed with my legs

hanging. Doing the push back, but stiff still. Took my meds, and

hoping a bit of relief soon.

Why is it most times my knee gets stiff within minutes of inactivity?

This happens most of the time. Every once in a while there is less

stiffness. I get so excited by that. Recovering? I hope.

Tomorrow is PT again. Still at 90 degrees as of Monday. Hoping it is

past that now. Otherwise wondering what OS will say at Monday's

appointment.

Didn't someone on this list give a website to order it, just a couple of weeks

ago or so? I would like to get it for my mum, who is getting a new knee the end

of the year. She doesn't have a computer, and won't have one, so these groups

aren't any use to her.

Never saw that note. I got one through the local library system.

Hopefully I won't need it for another knee.

Hi ,

Your family could have called you on your cell phone--at least with T-Mobile my family could call me--it wasn't considered roaming. It was that I just couldn't call them without it going into roaming. I am glad you are home and for the most part your experience was great. For me I had no problem going by myself. I met some amazing people who had surgery the same day as I did and we have stayed in contact. Keep us posted.

I really never had any worries about the Doctors, the operation itself, the hospital or going to Mexico. I also had one more bout of anxiety the second day after surgery that was mostly due to being all alone, with lack of sleep, and the effects of the IV medications for pain and nausea. I just had one of those, "what the Hell did I just do and why am I here in Mexico all by myself?" mental freak out moments.... It passed fairly quickly but it was tough with only e-mail to communicate with my wife and family. I probably should have just paid the cell phone roaming charges to make a few calls. I did finally get to talk to my wife a few times later and that helped immensely. I only briefly had minor nausea and the pain was not as bad as expected either. It was nice to able to practice my Spanish too. Everyone was super friendly and very caring. I would probably choose Dr. Aceves over any US Doctor even if the price was the same. I am glad to be home and am excited to begin my journey to a healthier me. I would recommend the VSG and Dr. Aceves to anyone considering bariatric surgery. I have already lost 10 lbs.

You really do need someone with you; I couldn't have done it alone. I had a

hysterectomy all alone, and that was really scary, so I understand the fear.

They never gave me anything to calm me down in that situation, either, and my

husband had to be at work (in a new job) so it was just me in my hospital room

in 1983, shaking so much from fear I didn't know what to do. I think the IV

morphine drip would have delayed you being able to get up and walk around, and

thereby delayed your recovery. This is what was explained to me by the

anesthesiologist who spoke with me before surgery.

Anyway, it's all over now and you've grown from the experience. The next time

you have to face something alone you'll be OK with it. God never gives us more

than we can handle, I believe that. All the fear is over and now all you have to

do is follow the protocol for the next 30 days, take your Mupps, and stay

positive that the best is yet to come. Congratulations on commiting to this

life-saving, life-changing procedure. You're on your way, Dude!!

Well, I just got home after being away 13 days for my bilateral knee

replacements. I am very tired (still on Vicodin) and am resting in my lift

chair (thanks to finding it on Craigslist). My cat was very happy to see me

and visa versa, although she is understandably wondering about and a bit

scared of my walker.

I have done nothing yet about getting organized or emptying my suitcases,

etc. My husband went to get my Rx's filled, so I am going nowhere.

I am still quite stiff and sore, but at least I am somewhat managing. I

still have not mustered up the courage to head upstairs.......

Hi , So glad that you are home and well. Take it easy! If you cansleep

on that chair, do! Why stress yourself.

When do you start PT? Will they come to your home? Mine did for almost a

month, but it was over Christmas and things were a bit nutsy.

Be well!

All the best, Joan, who's cats were glad to see her also!

I have PT starting at home in the morning. I think they will come 3 times a

week for 2-3 weeks. I am trying to vary my leg positions so I do not stiffen up

too quickly. I have a CPM machine which we will have to take upstairs to my bed

later on. Since I have the one machine here, I will have to be on it a lot. I

am hoping a few hours per knee per day/night at least. I will do what I can to

get through this without TOO much pain.

You go, girl!!! Maybe u can set up CPM on the sofa or a rollaway bed

downstairs so you won't have to go up the steps just to do that.

That's great, .

The CPM will keep your legs moving ... Good for circulation, for avoiding

stiffness, and for gently improving flexion. I had one in hospital for both

surgeries and at home for the second. I liked the way it felt and it was a

good way to warm up for my exercises.

Don't forget your meds before PT. And do something nice for yourself after -- or

better yet if someone else does something nice for you. My sister would make

tea or a fruit plate for me. It made me feel special. And it was also good

because I didn't have much appetite then.

Let us know how it's going if you get a chance.

Peace

Jackie

later on. Since I have the one machine here, I will have to be on it a lot. I am

hoping a few hours per knee per day/night at least. I will do what I can to get

through this without TOO much pain.
