Hi all - The leading CML expert for the Mayo Clinic in Arizona is among the

speakers who will be available to talk to patients at a conference next weekend

in Phoenix on clinical trials. Below is the news release from LLS. I am a member

of the conference committee and would be happy to also address individual

questions from people.

Free Public Conference on Blood Cancer Treatment Developments

To Be Held in Phoenix Oct. 16 for Patients, Caregivers and Clinicians

Arizona blood cancer patients, and the healthcare professionals who treat them,

are invited to attend a day long conference in Phoenix on Oct. 16, 2010. The

program will provide a comprehensive update on state-of-the-art and emerging

cancer research and clinical trials in Arizona which focus on leukemia, lymphoma

and myeloma.

A cancer clinical trial is a carefully controlled research study conducted by

medical teams to improve the care and treatment of cancer patients. Advances in

treatment for blood cancers depend on clinical trials of new therapies or new

combinations of therapies. Different types of cancer clinical trials are

designed to develop and test new and better ways to diagnose and treat cancer;

prevent or relieve treatment side effects; help prevent a return of cancer and

improve quality of life for patients.

Conference speakers will include physicians and nurses from the Mayo Clinic;

local attorneys with expertise in employment laws that impact patients in

clinical trials; an expert of the psycho-social impact of cancer and a 14-year

leukemia survivor who participated in a clinical trial. Schorr, a former

medical journalist and the founder of the Patient Power website, will discuss

his decision to participate in the clinical trial and the benefits it brought to

his family.

The program is free but advance registration is required to attend. Participants

can register online at http://www.lls.org/dm/education or by phone at (602)

567-7599

The program is sponsored by the Desert Mountain States chapter of the Leukemia

and Lymphoma Society, along with program partners including the ASU College of

Nursing and Health Innovation and the Arizona Cancer Coalition. Continuing

education credits will be provided through Northern Arizona Area Health

Education Center.
